So i gave my 2 week notice on Friday evening and when I came in on Monday morning, my desi manager told me to hand in my laptop and go home. I guess they were not happy in me leaving.
i already have a new job starting but I was surprised at the unprofessionalism.
i guess the lesson learned here is to give a week notice only.
It's not always unprofessionalism, maybe you had access to sensitive info, or maybe they wanted to start transition sooner. That is a common practice in some companies for certain type of roles. Your courtesy is to give them two weeks notice for an opportunity to do a hand off, they may choose to say no, but they have to pay you for those two weeks.
Re: Gave my 2 week notice on Friday evening...and desi manager let me go on Monday
There was no transition period since it will take them a month to hire someone. Also there is no sensitive info.
It was just a desi manager being an a-hole.
Re: Gave my 2 week notice on Friday evening...and desi manager let me go on Monday
I agree with X2 .. In almost all my jobs, even though the official notice period is a month or a few weeks , the manager will pay the dues for the entire month but let me go early ..
Letting you go early isnt unprofessional at all , because due to the sensitivity of the job , which you might not deem important but managers might consider it extremely important, they ask the individual to finish early.
However , if they let you go early but refused to clear your dues until the end of the official notice period, then thats totally unprofessional.
Some companies pay the dues only until your last working day, but thats with mutual consent.

i'm suppose to finish my present job in the end of December. since i finished my assigned work, my boss told me that i'll be paid but, if i wished, i could stay home...paid vacation...eh?. i'm starting another job on January 15th, iA :)
Re: Gave my 2 week notice on Friday evening...and desi manager let me go on Monday
As long as you get paid for the final two weeks, no harm done.
I've seen this happen in many organizations, esp. in the private sector, if an employee finds a position with a competitor organization.
Re: Gave my 2 week notice on Friday evening...and desi manager let me go on Monday
Absolutely agreed with Lucid.
Also to add, that its not only about the sensitivity of the information you have access to , because of which the companies decide to send you home early.
Rather, alot of companies have multiple reasons to do so , some of them can be :
To stop individuals conducting their job search by using office stationery, internet etc etc
- the person who resigns, doesnt have much work going on at their desk. Handover can take a day maybe , but they wont be meeting any new clients or carrying on their work , hence to stop others getting distracted , companies let go individuals after a day or two of resignation .

What does your employment contract state?
It seems to me that you have been dismissed, and you maybe able to take action against the employer. I think they also have to give you notice. When you went to work they basically said we don't want you and leave, which amounts to unfair dismissal, unless it was agreed with you or you did something seriously wrong at work, or you were on probationary period.
Re: Gave my 2 week notice on Friday evening...and desi manager let me go on Monday
No Arshad, this is not a case of unfair dismissal, coz OP said they tendered resignation on Friday.
OP's issue is that manager unexpectedly asked him to finish from work early and this is what we are telling him that its not something that is seen as unprofessional. It is a policy in many places and an informal practice in many others.
As long as they pay the OP until the last day of their notice period, OP is all set. But if they company pays the OP only until Friday ( the day they resigned ) then OP has a case to fight for clearance of dues.
Re: Gave my 2 week notice on Friday evening...and desi manager let me go on Monday
Did she tender a resignation without notice i.e with immediate effect or stated that she intended to resign after 2 weeks? If she has not resigned by the time that she is told to leave then she is effectively fired. Before you can fire someone you usually need to give them warnings. I am not a lawyer but it does look like unfair dismissal to me.
Re: Gave my 2 week notice on Friday evening...and desi manager let me go on Monday
What motivation would you have to work during that notice period anyway? And what motivation would the company have to interact with you during that time? They will not be assigning you any new tasks, nor will they call you in for any meetings etc. So sooner the better.
Re: Gave my 2 week notice on Friday evening…and desi manager let me go on Monday
I think when one says they are serving notice, it means that they resigned and are now on the notice period. Its not possible that a person starts serving notice without having resigned first..
This bit is really confusing though.. how much notice one serves is not decided by the employee but is the condition mentioned in the handbook and the employment contract at the time of starting a particular job.
So even if you had decided to give the notice a week later, you would still officially have to serve two weeks as per the company policy.
I am in US, and have seen this at a number of places. if the OP is in US it is a very standard practice and is not considered unfair dismissal, you are officially still employed and getting paid, and your records show your last day not as the day you were asked to stop coming in, but the last day per your notice.
The resignation letter or notice usually says one is resigning and giving 2 weeks notice for any transition, and what day the resignation is effective.
As a manager I have the option to accept the resignation and have the person walked out immediately. It's my problem as a manager how I intend to use those 2 weeks.
Btw I have never agreed to any contract asking for a 2 week notice, never seen it, it's more of an unwritten guideline and a courtesy you extend to your team, you are free not to do that, but most want to extend the courtesy.
