And an interesting interview…

Congratulations to him, arguably the greatest test opener of the past three decades and one of the six best batsmen of his generation along with Viv Richards, Javed Miandad, Allan Border, Greg Chappell and Gordon Greenidge. His hall mark was his water-tight and immaculate defence and his most significant achievement (apart from his 34 test hundreds) was his 13 test centuries against the mighty Windies. I thoroughly enjoyed his duels with Imran and Miandad during the eighties

(ps. did not include Zaheer Abbas because he did not play 100+ tests like the others in this list although I rate him very highly, a class player in every sense, one of my all-time favourites...)

Re: Gavasakar turns 60 today!!!

who here cares that gawakster turned 90 ?

Many connoisseurs who appreciate his skills... and would take the opportunity to pay tribute to those skills.

Re: Gavasakar turns 60 today!!!

Probably among the greatest test batsmen ever…and definitely the most technically correct :k:

Unfortunately, he did not develop the temperament for ODIs until the fag end of his career.

^yup

Re: Gavasakar turns 60 today!!!

Old school Batsman. Some times you feel like he might walk out one day in a head band or floppy hat with the arm guard. He also mentioned Pakistan players admiringly in his autobiography. He used to be the biggest stumbling block between Pakistan and victory in the 80s.

I still think all the fans were robbed of a showdown of biblical proportions in the WC 87 final when Gavaskar and Imran had both declared the final would be their last game, neither team made it there.

Before Ganguly, Tendulkar, and Laxman took it to the next step he was the one who helped India draw a series against Australia in Australia with 2 centuries. His last test innings of 96 in Banglore against Tauseef and Iqbal Qasim was the best against spin along with Salim Maliks 236 against Warne and May.
