Gardisil- for women

For females between the ages of 9-26:

I recently went to the gyno and have been watching tv ads about gardisil. I spoke to her about it and she recommended that I get it. You have to get three vaccines over 6 months and it’s suppossed to prevent u from two major types of cervical cancers and two types of HPVs. The vaccine may have minor sideeffects like diahrea, headache, etc for a limited time. Even if u have had one form of those cancers u should still get it if u r within that age group. You can go on their website to get more info about it but I’ve been telling all my female relatives and friends about it so I figured I post it here too. And if u r in the NYC area and are looking for a gyno, I can refer u to the awesome woman I go to cuz let’s face it, some gynos are horrible at what they do.

The type of HPV the vaccine protects against are sexually transmitted. If you are not sexually active, then you do not need this vaccine. However anyone who is sexually active can get HPV and genital warts.

Understanding HPV

Re: Gardisil- for women

is cervical cancer also an STD? If someone doesn't get the vaccine cuz they think they won't get an STD meanwhile the vaccine protects from other things, why wouldn't u get it?

I think it's wrong to say u don't need this vaccine cuz the hpv is an STD even if ur not sexually active. It also protects against cervical cancer, I don't know any woman that wouldn't want it. I mean it's YOUR health so to each their own.

The vaccine only protects you from the cervical cancer you get from HPV. Nearly all forms of cervical cancer are from HPV. HPV vaccine is effective against the two strains of HPV that cause the most cervical cancer has been licensed in the U.S. The type of HPV it protects against are only sexually transmitted. The vaccine will not protect you from cervical cancer you get from other ways.

Even though it is a vaccine, it still has risks. If you don’t need something then why put something in your body? Why take a medicine if you do not need it or will not help you in anyway? this is a new vaccine…it’s still testing the waters…

Re: Gardisil- for women

it is a new vaccine on the market but has been tested for over 40 yrs and approved by the FDA. If a woman doesn't want cuz she's not sexually active that's her choice. But wouldn't u want if daughter to get it? U can tell her not to have sex all u want but u may never know if she's sexually active before marriage.

Oh I'm not advising anyone to not get it. You know yourself best. If you are sexually active, then by all means, this seems to be a good vaccine...I'm just saying that if you aren't sexually active then you really don't need the vaccine. But you know yourself best. I just wanted to clarify some misconceptions about the vaccine. It is not a panacea for all cervical cancer---it only decreases the risk of cervical by the HPV strains (16,18, 6,11) that are sexually transmitted which is also** behaviorally preventable.** I just wanted to clarify on who would really need the vaccine*.* These things cost $. $360 in my area. If you don't need it, then why put money on this? But you know yourself best- if you are sexually active you should probably consider the vaccine. I just wanted to clarify some facts.

Also, just because it's fda approved doesn't make it safe--many drug problems are only found out about after they are mass marketed. the best example of this is vioxx- google it. As with everything else, pharmaceutical companies are there to make money, more then help you- so use your judgement, do research, and don't just do something because you saw it on a commercial.

The other reason I am posting is this is to review my human papilloma virus facts for my test on monday!

Re: Gardisil- for women

^lol. i didnt know the cervical cancer it did cover were the ones caused by HPV. good point. but yeh, everyone knows themselves so if one is sexually active it is a good vaccine. and as far as the costs go, as long as u have insurance it shouldnt be a problem.

Re: Gardisil- for women

Sorry, I keep thinking about thalidomide, the very popular medication given to pregnant women in the 60s. "Who wouldnt want this medication? It cures ill-effects of pregnancy!" And so thousands of handicapped babies were born.

When theres a new drug, a new treatment, a new vaccination I am very hesitant. I would never consider this if I had a girl, not till its been tested and verified for a much longer time than this. Really, if a gal goes for yearly checkups to her gyn and is not sexually active, there is absolutely no need for it.

Re: Gardisil- for women

I have heard not very many good things about it and i would not be getting it or letting my daughter have it. Unfortunately i dont have any links to prove it right now. If i find the links i will come back and update.

Re: Gardisil- for women

does anyone know why it only applies to females between 9-26? after the age of 26 is there something that makes the vaccine less effective or...?

Simply because testing has only been done in women of this age group.
HPV Vaccine Information For Young Women

I agree....I still get a shudder when I hear the word thalidomide...

I asked my gyno about gardisil last year, she advised me against it

Sorry for sound ignorant, but what if you are sexually active but only with your spouse (duh!), would you still be at risk for HPV?

Girls who are married should be visiting their gyno every year for a checkup. I am surprised how many women do not do this and never get checked for anything until they get pregnant!! Cervical cancer can be very curable if it is detected in the early stages, yet the early stages may be often asymptomatic so thats why its important to get checked yearly by your gyno. Its the 5th leading cancer killer in women so ladies please take care!!

Re: Gardisil- for women

If ur spouse doesn't have hpv then I believe u don't need it. But if anyone thinks this is wrong please correct me.

I believe any female over the age of 21 should be going to a gyno, not only if ur married. A woman should be going even if she's not sexually active since they do a lot of tests other than to check for STDs.

I agree! It's very important!!Not just for cervical cancer, but for many many other diseases- and it is very important to emphazise whether or not you have had the vaccine!!! Vaccine only protects against SOME STRAINS!!

Only if your spouse has HPV. HPV is an STD...like syphilis, gonorrhea, herpes. The same rule applies. If your spouse was playing around before/is and s/he got an STD, you can get it too. It is just like any other STD.

yeah, thalidomide-- that was a scary drug!!! A
