Re: Gardening help...!!!

Afia, the mint plant can be placed outside if its not too cold ie above say about 5 degrees. keep it in a sunny position in a and pick the tips of each plants ie the top three or for leaves, this will make it nice and bushy and grow more...if you dont, in a few months it will grow flowers and after that lose its leaves.

if you plant in a larger container afer a couple of years youll have a big bush.

coriander (can be put outside when the weather is warmer) feel the soil if it feels dry and podery , you should water.... growing plants need damp NOT WATERLOGGED soil.

once the leaves reach about ten to fifteen cm tall just cut and use in your cooking, if you dont theleaves will eventually grow taller the leaves will become thin and feathery (wont be able to use them for food) and then it will have small white flowers which will turn into green coriander seeds which are very fragrant and can be used in cooking
after this they (seeds) turn brown and are the ordinary coriander seeds that you buy to grind and use in curries.

I grow coriander (dont bother buying the plants because its SO easy to grow your own)
by just
sprinkling the coriander seed (the type ie cook with) in a grow bag or large seed tray filled with soil, and cover with about 1cm soil, water when the every other day until the leaves grow and then water when the soil gets a bit dry (soil sould always be damp-ish not soggy)and put in a sunny place.

you'll have lots of cheap coriander for chutney and cooking etc.

Re: Gardening help…!!!

I think the best garden advice is on the BBC website

heres a link for lawns

for other info go to

its easy to understand

Re: Gardening help...!!!

I didn't realise that you can grow coriander from the seeds we use in cooking.

Re: Gardening help...!!!

yep, they are just ordinary seeds like practically all the whole spices in your your store cupboard. you can grow fenugreek from fenugreek seeds, others may need warmer climate.

one word however............... make sure they are not the roasted variety.

Re: Gardening help...!!!

lazy daisy....thanks heaps !!!!

so i guess they r ok at window sill ....i'll pick the top leaves of mint ....do i need to do something else too ....so they grow more .....i love these two in my food

plus i changed the pot .....moved them to a bigger one ...addded more compost/....but how can i tell that much compst is enough ....its soft ....n not that tightly stuffed in pot...????

Shahreen.....:)well i tried growing corriander from seeds .....but failed ....i blamed it on my no gardening knowledge

Re: Gardening help...!!!

push the compost around the plant til its firm....not rock hard, the roots need to be able to grow.

whats the temp where you are, it may be that you can keep it outside

Re: Gardening help...!!!

in berlin ....its 9 C outside i think at the moment .....but its quite dynamic these days ......from 3 -25 ....all possible in one day :)

waisay i prefer to keep it in the kitchen

Re: Gardening help...!!!

yep keep it there but take the mint outside in the day to get fresh air , it woont mind 9 degrees

Re: Gardening help...!!!

my mum loves gardening too, and tho i dont like it myself, i try and help her when i can. You can actually grow pretty much any fruit/veg/herb from seeds if you have the right conditions. we've grown chilli plants, chestnut trees, peach, plum and a couple of other things that i cant remember the names of right now from seeds. with the mint, i would recommend growing it outside, its pretty indestructable - we've had a mint patch growing for years, it even survived my dads attempt at gardening when he put what i can only imagine was weedkiller (and not compost) on half the patch.

personally i think the 'secret' to a good garden is compost. i kno my mum and dad spend alot of money on compost every year (we use about 10 bags each time) but its definitely worth it.

http://www.marthastewart.com/page.jhtml?type=learn-cat&id=cat243&navLevel=2 is good as well. You can learn about different plants and how to take care of them in their plant encyclopedia.

Re: Gardening help...!!!

since we're talking about gardening..I thought I'd post a few questions:

1) what is the best way to get rid of nasty ol' weeds that take over the entire garden..you know those clover like ones?

2) ants....every year we get ants nesting in the soil..what's the best way to get rid of them?

3) the roses' leaves have got black spots on them and they turn yellow....I've tried the sprays and powders, what else can I do?
