Garba

I went to one last year…and the season is coming up again. I’m looking forward to attending once more.

It’s an amazing thing to witness when performed well and even more fun if you get in and try to dance with them.

Anyone here that can tell us more about the celebration?

Yeah they tend to get a bit upset if you start lambada there though.. sigh

what’s Garba?

Actually the exact word in Dandiya. Garba is the traditional dance from Gujarat, India. The wrod comes from Garbha which me (unborn child), Garbhavati means pregnant woman. Dandiya is played with Sticks (dandi) and is during Navratri (Nine Nights) .The last day of Navratri is called Dussehra (Dasara) and is celebrated all over India. Dandiya is popular more in Gujarat and Maharashtra (Mumbai particular), but is increasingly getting popular all over India and Middle East , US and UK.

Usually traditional songs were played in Dandiya but now Disco Songs and popular Hindi film songs are played. Dandiya or Garba is popular among all communites of India Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jains, Parsis.

Dandiya is very popular among the Ismaili community (many are Pakistanis). Ismailis , Khijas and Bohras were originally Hindus from Gujarat state where Garba is popular. Many of these communities celebrate their own version of Navratri.
