Garam-Thanda

Not temperature wise but their effects on the body.

Have you heard the elders saying that eat this it is “garam” such as panjeeri after you deliver a baby…or yeh khalo it is “thanda” such as lauki ka raita for indigestion..

Wo what exactly do you mean by that? What are the qualities of garam and thanda type foods? Name some in each category and their benefits.

Re: Garam-Thanda

Ive heard this quite a lot growing up because my nani's father was a hakeem. For practically every ailment, she had a solution...I wish I had compiled them in a book or some sort. :(

For garam and thanda...it has to do with taseer...and how it affects your mizaj I guess. Im having trouble finding English words for them here.

Some people have garam mizaj and they are recommended to eat thandi cheezein to calm their body temperature or disposition...horrific explanation I know. I just cant find the right words I guess.

Saunf is garam and given to help to lose weight, help with constipation or other digestive issues.

Thats all I can think of right now...talk about a brain freeze. :(

Re: Garam-Thanda

Like Reha explained ... The garam and thanda taseer of food is very much a real thing ... some foods can have immense impact on our body and the way we feel just by going with the thanda /garam food diet plans ..

Mangoes are garam taseer ... most spices are garam taseer , like turmeric for example ...
similarly, water melon is thanda taseer , just like grapes are ...

In olden times , people used to balance their diets in such a way that if they had garam taseer food , they would have something along with it , some food with thanda taseer , like if they ate two or three mangoes at a time, they would cool down the effect on the body by having salty lassi ....

Re: Garam-Thanda

It’s all to do with ayurveda and hakeem stuff. some foods just have garam taseer or thanda taseer and too much of either will give you certain side effects

And yes, my parents are experts at this garam/thanda thing..
I've been deprived of 'garam' stuff throughout my childhood.. :(

Re: Garam-Thanda

I think regarding panjeeri, all those nuts and seeds, they provide alot of Vitamin E, which improves your blood circulation. So maybe thats why its considered gharam?

Re: Garam-Thanda

Midnight , I read somewhere that Garam thanda taseer of food is basically the natural fluid content in the food .. foods that are more dry are considered garam taseer … the ones that have natural juices like watermelon etc .. are considered thanda taseer ..:hmmm:

Re: Garam-Thanda

heard alot about cucumber's thandi taseer, drinking "kachi lassi" after having mangoes in summer to even out the garam taseer.

hmm interesting, i’m just noticing this is prob true…but wait mango’s are garam and they are neither watery nor dry…hmm…

Re: Garam-Thanda

apparently garam things make you get your period faster...and according to some aunties you can't have garam cheezay during pregnancy cuz it'll cause abortion or something!!!
