India are expected to announce on Thursday that their most successful captain Sourav Ganguly has been dropped for the series against Sri Lanka.
Indian newspaper reports say Rahul Dravid will skipper the team in seven one-day internationals.
And the Hindustan Times claims Dravid will be given until the 2007 World Cup.
Ganguly has been struggling with an elbow injury but has also been involved in a public row with coach, Australian Greg Chappell.
Ganguly was captain for the Zimbabwe series but it was marred after he later accused Chappell of asking him to step down before the first Test in Bulawayo because of his poor batting form.
Chappell sent a confidential email to the India cricket board in which he said Ganguly was physically and mentally unfit to lead India.
The email was leaked and caused a huge row which led to the cricket board calling a crisis meeting. Both agreed to a truce.
Newspapers believe Chappell is the right man to take India forward and if Ganguly is dropped it gives the coach complete power.
Ganguly has won 21 Tests and 76 one-day internationals in his five-year reign making him the most successful India captain. Dravid has led India in Ganguly’s absence and has had mixed results in five Test matches and 17 ODIs.
