Gangsters, Wannabes, Where’s Islam ?

**Gangsters, Wannabes, Where’s Islam ?

**by I.H.Ali (PAG)

The average Muslim youth in the West, who or what is he ?
He stands on a street corner with his funky hairstyle, latest designer gear, gold rings, bracelets and necklaces; Maybe he’s cruising in a hired Beemer checking out the talent. Blasting out the latest beats, smoking weed, using foul language every other sentence. We all know him, we might even be him!

This youth will fall into one of two groupings: 1. The Gangster, he is part of a gang, sharing a sense of belonging, loyalty and pride, he will never sell out his mates even if it means taking the ‘rap’ or going to jail. He gets into fights with other gangs mainly over drugs or girls. 2. The Wannabe ! This curious phenomenon is not a real gangster. He spends time and money attempting to convince his mates that he is ‘street’. This will involve having the latest Ja Rule CD and talking about who he ‘sparked up’, bouncing (not walking) with pride. The ‘wannabe’ sees the designer clothes and flash souped up motors as something to admire and emulate. If anyone asks this youth; ‘Why ? Why do you act like this ?’, The response would most likely be : ‘I get respect man’ ‘It impresses my mates innit !’ But what’s the real reason ? Why are many Muslim youth in this mess ? The reality is that the idea of individualism and the ‘me, myself and I’ mentality is responsible for the behaviour of these Muslim youth. There is no doubt this concept stems from the western way of life which places sensual pleasure above all other values. The key idea stemming from this is the value of pride and the ego, which goes hand in hand with the lifestyle of a gangster. No one should be able to put him down if he is a gangster, if someone does, he’s in trouble ! After all, the gangster is the ‘baddest’ ! These values do not breed stability in society rather they create an atmosphere of fear. What Does Islam Say About The Gangster ? Islam has a solution to all aspects of man’s life, including man’s relationship with others. Islam defines what makes a true man and the correct way to live life. Islam has attracted people from all sorts of backgrounds including gangsters. If we look to how some of the Sahabah embraced Islam, one particular story stands out, that of Abu Dhar al-Ghifaary. One morning he went and found the Prophet (SAW) sitting alone. He approached him and asked him to recite the Quran for him. The Prophet (SAW) recited and he listened, it was not long until Abu Dhar embraced Islam by shouting: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger” The Prophet (SAW) asked him: “Where are you from, my Arab brother?” Abu Dhar answered: “From Ghifaar” On hearing this the Prophet’s (SAW) face was filled with wonder and astonishment. The question one has to ask is why was the Prophet (SAW) so astonished? The reason behind this was that Ghifaar was a tribe with a nasty reputation for highway robbery. Its people were famous for theft, they were a tribe of gangsters similar to the modern day hustler ! Upon embracing Islam Abu Dhar showed the courage to go and declare Islam openly in front of the Quraish. It was the first time anyone had declared Islam openly and challenged the arrogance of the Quraish. What was even more amazing was that Abu Dhar had no protection in Makkah which resulted in him getting badly beaten by the kuffar. However, so strong was his faith, instead of running away he came back the next day to disgrace the idols of the quraish, which meant he was beaten even more. Abu Dhar was a gangster, from a particular tribe of hoodlums. Yet Islam transformed his personality and he showed bravery that the modern day gangster cannot even dream of. Imagine going into a rival gangs ‘patch’ to challenge the way they run things without any protection where you know you will get a ‘kicking’, yet you return the next day to challenge them again. This is the meaning of being a true man in Islam, the one who calls for the good (al-maruf) and forbids the evil (al-munkar) and in the process fears no one. Muslim youth should aspire to be like these great men. The men who demonstrated for Allah’s sake what bravery and courage really is. They were men who did not fear anyone except Allah and men who had the most outstanding personality. So, Muslim youth – Who do you want to be remembered as ? Tupac or Abu Dhar ?

Re: Gangsters, Wannabes, Where’s Islam ?

its a gay article. retarded. Its shallow and meaningless. Makes many false assumptions. Its stupid.

Re: Gangsters, Wannabes, Where’s Islam ?

Sounds like it's written by the same people who write those silly 'you're going to hell' booklets you see in public bathrooms every great once in awhile.

Re: Gangsters, Wannabes, Where’s Islam ?

Dont be rude, somebody clearly went to a lot of trouble to write that.

But they dont realise that we have no wannabee gangsters on this forum that need reforming, although there is the newwannabee...we can send her to them.

Re: Gangsters, Wannabes, Where’s Islam ?

True that a lot of Muslim youth are “gangsters” and into ghetto culture but western society is not to blame for this (white kids are hardly ever like that), don’t scapegoat western society for everything, of course it is responsible for very many social ills but don’t dig at it unnecessarily because it looks cheap and your opinions lose credibility even at times when you’re stating the facts.

The kids’ parents are to blame, uneducated parents working long hours or staying at home all day not having the vaguest clue about what their children get up to or who they associate with is responsible for this sort of behaviour, it’s not exclusive to Muslims, you have it with the Black and Latino youth in America and Muslim and to a lesser extent Sikh youth in England.

Parents have to take responsibility for their own kids and not be indifferent to them, it’s true that Islam definitely does reform people, I’ve seen with my own eyes guys from family and friends who were dealing drugs, getting into racist violence, stealing, alcoholising, womanising suddenly got reformed after being exposed to Islam, started helping out in the community getting involved in projects giving Muslims a good name, and spending all their time doing good things like sports, education and the Mosque…

…Partisanship, pride and loyalty to an identity and ideology is innate in all humans because we are pack animals, some people satisfy this natural inclination by associating with a gang, others by their patriotism to temporal identities such as nation, tribe and others to an artificial country such as Pakistan, when our religion Islam came it abolished all these racist forms of socially divisive partisanships and whilst allowing people to retain their individuality in terms of nation, culture and language it said partisanship is not based on any of these but rather on faith, whoever chose to could become part of this brotherhood established for the sake of Allah, and for those who are into it it’s really quite a strong warm feeling of pride and loyalty towards our religion and coreligionists.

…But still the primary responsibility lies at the parents, you can’t let your kids do as they please and hope the Mosque will sort them out, they are also very messed up people in the garb of religion with ulterior motives who’ll screw your kids up more than they already are (like we’ve seen a few week ago), not everyone wearing a beard is to be trusted, some people think if we send our kids with Jamaa’ah At-Tableegh that’s it we’ve fulfilled our duty and they’ll come back angels, it doesn’t work like that sometimes the freedoms they enjoy away from home are the only reason they’re going. If you can’t look after your kids don’t have any, let alone a full footy team.

Re: Gangsters, Wannabes, Where’s Islam ?

the hizb are back...
salaam brothers...somewhat of a generalisation dont you think?...but anyway let me ask you what you plan to do to solve these problems...
Individuals make mistakes and individuals are responsible for their actions...no-one else...yes social factors are involved...but people deal with problems in different ways...go to bethnall green and you get some bengali prostitutes...yes sad you say but these choices were their own...they chose to take heroin and now prostitution is the only way to fund their habit...yes they were in poverty but so are many bengalis
these pakis that peddle drugs do it for what?...money...bengalis in east london and pakis up north make a lot of money...and yes you will talk about how this desire is because of capitalism and you are right...capitalism is what builds these needs that cant be fulfilled bla bla...and yes that is what makes an individual go out and commit crimes...greed blah blah....but individuals choose to make these choices...capitalism has built these needs in all of us but we dont all go out to commit crimes...individuals make their own choices...
yes you can blame western civilisation to a degree but what you do is why no-one listens is that you never attribute blame to the individual...i cant blame the west on the day of judgement can i?

Re: Gangsters, Wannabes, Where’s Islam ?

You all are going to hell unless you repent and accept Jesus as your savior, because he loves you....(Jews and Muslims excluded)

Re: Gangsters, Wannabes, Where’s Islam ?

I dont think the artical blames the west. I think the point is that muslim youth have lost their identlity. Its not talking about the ills of the west but the way of life that the youth are taking.

Take for example the blacks of the USA. They preach their music - but listen to the lyrics and you soon find that the music helps drum them down into the sterotypical black thug type.

I would say more an attack on the parents who dont know what their kids are turning into, the getto blacks of the UK. The lifestyle they are picking is shallow and meaningless - no substance -as the artical says ego and pride.

Re: Gangsters, Wannabes, Where’s Islam ?

Perfect religion, no matter what we do we’ve the guarantee that we’ll be in heaven holding hands with Mother Teresa and the Pope singing, "ring a ring o’ roses" as long as we accept Christ’s sacrifice for our sins, and what’s more is we don’t have to abide by any of the “old laws” or get persecuted for breaking them because God is unfair and they were only meant for a people who didn’t have access to the Holy Spirit. I had someobody preach this to me today.

Re: Gangsters, Wannabes, Where’s Islam ?

that article is too much of a generalisation! Dont judge the majority because of the minority! There are a few bad apples in every community.

dont forget its just a stage that a few boys go through..acting hard and 'street wise' only lasts a few years and after that it fades away once lads mature a bit!

mostly depends on the area where you live and the people you hang around with. when one guy turns into a 'rude boy' then all the rest of his mates start adopting the same style and copying him... thats the problem!

we need independent free thinking individuals..too many followers! dont be a slave to society.. do your own thing!
