I was watching a documentary about how he went on a hunger strike so India would be forced to pay Pakistan the money according to the partition agreement and the said reason being a part of why he was assassinated I did not know that. My respect for him greatly increased.

Re: Gandhi
There lwas this incident during the Hindu Muslim riots ( as shown in 1982 movie Gandhi). A Hindu person was mourning the loss of his son at the hands of a Muslim (of course reverse was also occurring). So he was justifying retaliative action. To which Gandhi said "raise a Muslim boy who has lost his parents to this madness. And raise him as a Muslim."
I bet there was not a dry eye in the theater.
The Rev. Martin Luther King and Bishop Desmond Tutu modeled their approach after Gandhi.
Indeed he was a great man.I amazed at how he mobilized millions of people across the nation for a non violence motion.
But he has love for celibacy so when newlywed couple from his followers used to visit him for asking his blessing...
He used to ask some of them to promise him that they will remain celibate all over their life...
And treat each other as brother and sister...

Interesting. Any authentic sources or the examples where people followed this.
Re: Gandhi
I dont have exact source to elaborate to whom he said this…but you should google for his experiments with celibacy…
i read that in a regional news paper…
Experiment on Celibacy by Mahatma Gandhi, Part- I - Peace and Collaborative Development Network
Mahatma Gandhi wrote, “We shall now indicate how married couples may observe brahmacharya and so conclude this rather long chapter. A married person cannot observe celibacy merely by following rules regarding diet, air and water. He must also refrain from being alone with his wife. We shall realize on reflection that, except for the purpose of conjugal relations, it is not necessary to be alone with one’s wife. At night the husband and the wife must sleep in separate rooms. During the day they should remain fully occupied with useful activity and pure thoughts. They should read such books and meditate over such lives as would strengthen them in their good resolve and should frequently remind themselves that all pleasures lead to suffering. Whenever they feel passion rising in them, they should take a cold bath. This will transform the cosmic fire in their bodies into a benign influence for both men and women and increase their happiness. All this is certainly hard of achievement, but conquering difficulties is what we are born for and. anyone who wishes to acquire good health must conquer this one.”7

This reminds me Ekta Kapoor’s soaps. Does Ekta aunty herself follow this philosophy?

But there was only one Gandhi ji. no?
Gandhi ji was great personality of his times. Just a question, is there a group of people India who talk against Gandhi ji and his philosophies?

have to work on it. As far as I remember, his Ahinsa philosophy was not compromised for services during war
Re: Gandhi
i think for every good idea gandhi had, he had like two bad ones. stuff like usage of religion in his political speeches, wanting reservation for caste based minorities rather than abolishing caste, anti-technology attitude, undue importance to hindi as opposed to other languages.. not a fan. don't know much about his personal life and celibacy etc, but the political viewpoints are enough for me to know his ideas wouldn't work in today's india.
currently the only part of his ideas that gets attention is the grassroots level activism, and this is channeled towards anti-corruption.

Nathuram Godse also commented that he kept fast for protecting muslims from Hindus in Hindu majority area and Hindus followed it but had he done the same in muslim majority area, muslims wouldn't have cared, tragically after Mahatama's death Nathuram's community was targeted.

His concept of celibacy was of origin from Gita, where sex is supposed to be required only for procreation

He worked as medical worker, he thought that brits are suffering casualties but later found it was the native you were bearing the burnt, so he helped victims irrespective of side.

His use of religion in speech was to make sure that his thought are as universal as any other religion. Mahatama initially didn't support caste based religion, but during subsequent round table conferences Dalits were treated as separate group, secondly congress itself was divided on support of Dalit. Ghandian economy was more of being self sufficient on the basis of technological independence. Lastly gandhi supported hindustani not hindi, hndustani is mix of urdu and hindi and spoken in Hindi heartland. Founding father envisaged democracy in the country which was always ruled and followed personality cults. That is why Indian democracy is still gang land democracy where people still follow and value an individual more that democratic thought itself.
