gallstones

friends,
i need ur guidance plz. my close friend who is 5 months pregnant, she has recently been diagnosed of 2small gallstones. now doctors have prescribed her removal of gallbladder after delivery til then she can take Brufen tablets in case of bad pain in lower right rib due to stones.. doctors also say that gallbladder removal wil be necessary even during pregnancy if pain increases too much .
she is too much worried about the consequences of taking medicines during pregnancy, and any surgery during pregnancy. i know v well how much she has waited for this pregnancy. and i really wish a healthy baby plus smooth pregnancy for her . if anyone has gone through this during her pregnancy can u plz share ur experiences ?? like how u managed to tolerate gallstones pain during pregnancy? what was effect of pain killers? if anyone had gallbladder removal during pregnancy, what was the aftereffect on baby and mother??

Re: gallstones

Although, not pregnant, my khala just had her gallbladder removed a few days ago. She had a pain during her roza, and thought it was just gas/flatulence. She described it as jabbing pain, and had to break her roza. After iftari, it got so bad that she was taken to the hospital. The med team took a sonogram and declared that she had 2 stones in her gallbladder, and needed the organ to be removed.

The surgery may have lasted anywhere from 10-30 min, but she was in for 3 hrs. She's recovering fine Alhamdulillah, but has to be very careful in her movements as her stitching causes her pain. She was able to join Eid prayer. Her prescribed diet is different. At first she was only allowed clear liquids, so we made her "yuckni". She is to eat lots of veggies, and fiber, and stick to whole grain foods. Right now, we have a pot of brown rice cooking for her.

Congrats to your friend for her long awaited pregnancy! May Allah bless her with a smooth pregnancy and ease her fear/difficulties, and bless her with a pious child(ren), Ameen. I'm sorry my khala's situation wasn't during pregnancy but I thought to share in case it even shed a bit of light.

Re: gallstones

I was diagnosed to have gallstones during pregnancy, apparently my gallbladder is full of stones. the pain used to be so intense, it used to go from fron right through to my back, doctors did not even consider it an option to remove it during pregnancy. I was only allowed to take paracetamol, ibuprofen is not recommended in pregnancy. N I was high risk pregnancy. The pain was really sharp after I used to eat and the intensity used to sometimes make me sick, this is in last stages of pregnancy so was not morning sickness.

Was given an appointment for after delivery for a check up but missed it as was busy with baby. They had recommended removal through keyhole surgery which has a very quick recovery time but my pain settled after I had my baby, this was 4 years ago. I still get the pain the odd time. But not like it was back then.

I know plenty of people that have had theirs removed but not anyone during pregnancy, recovery seemed to be pretty straightforward.

Re: gallstones

I was diagnosed with gallstones during pregnancy at 24 weeks.. I wasn't a candidate for removal because it was pretty late in pregnancy.. I had 4/5 very intense attacks that landed me in the ER with morphine and percocet for home.. I almost went into pre term labor at 32 weeks during one of the attacks and transferred to the high risk hospital but Alhamdulillah docs were able to control the pain and let me go through the pregnancy on meds.. the pediatrician was afraid that my child will be born with withdrawals considering I was given a lot of narcotics to minimize the pain but alhamdulillah no such thing happened.

I had a c section at 39 wees and was supposed to go back after 6 weeks for the gall bladder removal but I had anoter attack 3 weeks post partum and they did an emergency operation to remove gall bladder.. it was laproscopic surgery and lasted 5 hours because I had stones sticking to my liver!!! It was supposed to be no more than 2 hours long!

Alhamdulillah I recovered well.. I had to pump and dump for a while so never got to establish the milk supply and my child was formula fed but other than that it went smoothly.

While I was pregnant I was on a very strict diet basically boiled rice and lentils is all I ate.. anything else triggered attacks and after landing in the ER for even a bite of twix chocolate I just had to suck it up and not eat anything.. at the end it got so bad that I had gall stones attack even without eating anything.

I trusted my doctors and especially the surgeon who was following me for gallstones.. he said he will remove it if needed but it will also mean the baby will need to be delivered so he was going to avoid that any cost and alhamdulillah we made it. :)

hope this helps.

Re: gallstones

dont have personal experience with this but having managed numerous patients in the ER with biliary colic (pain due to gallstones) ... I can tell you that brufen (ibuprofen) and other NSAIDS are NOT recommended for pain control in pregnancy. PLz have your friend re discuss with ASAP with her OBGYN.
Her course is difficult to predict. some pregnant ladies with gallstones do just fine with no or occasional pain control and others have a terrible time of it and can require surgery.
assuming normal pregnancy, cholecystectomy in pregnancy is not uncommon. per the current guidelines ... operative intervention can be performed in any trimester. however, these guidelines can vary due to lots of other factors that are to weighed against each other by the evaluating surgeon and/or OBGYN.

Re: gallstones

Thanks alot friends
now her doctor has prescribed her buscopan plus tablets as painkiller for gallstones. is it safe?
and plz share ur experience about ur food routine, digestion issues after removal of gallbladder? even after passing many months or years. did this removal cause any problem to ur body or not?

I have issue of diarrhea n abdominal cramps after cholectstectomy.

Re: gallstones

she lives in pakistan.
plus i want to add something unfortunately, recently in her sixth month she has also started feeling pain in lower left rib and left shoulder pain. where spleen, pancreas liver lies. i pray her reports would be clear amen.
she actualy used duphaston 10mg tabs, 2 times a day, for first five months of her her pregnancy. now she is concerned that it might be duphaston (progestron) which affected her gallblader etc (five months use of duphastan causes high production of progestron hormone ).
what is ur opinion friends?
