Mathematics is not the problem. problem lies in History and other social subjects

Re: Gali Gali Khula School!

This year The Lyceum School won the Best International Delegation award at the Harvard Model United Nations in which schools from over 30 countries participated. (New record: The Lyceum School wins Harvard MUN – The Express Tribune) Every year there are also newspaper reports about high school students winning international distinctions in GCE Advanced Level exams that are also taken by students in several other commonwealth countries. So on the one end of the spectrum there are private schools in Pakistan like The Lyceum School that offer British style curriculum and relatively decent quality education. However, these for-profit schools charge steep fees that unfortunately only very few can afford. The schools for the many, including private schools in Pak that are sometimes only marginally better than public ones which reportedly often lack even basic necessities like books and chairs, can’t measure up to the top private schools serving the most affluent strata of the society. What makes the disparities in the education system more problematic is that mostly it’s students from the top tier of private schools who are able to compete for the best universities’ seats in Pak or the best jobs in the corporate sector that demand proficiency in English and fancy degrees. Both good universities and good jobs are already scarce in a poor country like Pakistan.

And yet the ubiquity of private schools in Pak attests to the desire of parents from almost all socio-economic backgrounds to send their children to ‘modern’ schools promising quality and “English medium” education even if those schools are unable to deliver in the end as well as the best private schools do. Although parents may be struggling to make ends meet themselves, they still often try to pay for their kids’ schooling. They want the best for them. So if the education department was not an afterthought for the government and it was not spending such a tiny amount of its annual budget on education that it currently does, public schooling would not be in shambles in Pakistan. Instead, public schools would attract more qualified teachers and offer better quality education, and as a result at least not so rich parents wouldn’t deem it necessary to send their kids to private schools.

Alas, that’s not the case. But that must change because quality education is key to achieving upward social mobility. For example, in the US there are private schools as well charging $40,000 per year and the best public schools are often located in higher income neighborhoods but still even inner city schools and those located in relatively disadvantaged areas offer decent quality of education, not least because public schooling expenditure is often the biggest item in state and local budgets. So while it is not a walk in the park, many hardworking, dedicated students go on to study at Harvard or Yale or other top American universities even though those students were not born with a silver spoon and did not attend private schools.

In contrast, what we see in Pak is a perpetuation of cycle: if you are lucky to be born in a well-off family, you will have good opportunities in life, attend good schools and universities, have a shot at the best jobs and will likely be able to provide well for your kids in future; if not, well tough luck because all odds are stacked against you and chances are your kids will hardly have any better opportunities than you did. But by improving public schooling, instead of neglecting it, life chances of at least some people from not so privileged backgrounds can improve so that they and their kids can have a brighter, more prosperous future.
