Back-2-back French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten has decided to pull out of Wimbledon citing injury but many people suspect that kuerten’s resentment over how the seedings are decided at Wimbledon(which takes into account only grass-court records) may have been a reason.Alex Corretja, losing finalist at the French Open, and other Spanish clay-court specialists have threatened to boycott Wimbledon if they are unhappy with the seedings when they are announced .Former top ranked player Marcelo Rios of Chile also won’t be competing but that is no surprise. Rios has missed the last two wimbledons and once famously said “grass is for cows”. Some people attribute this quote to Ivan Lendl, the clay-court king of yester-years who could never win the Wimbledon.
I personally prefer clay-courts. Grass-courts typically have fewer rallies. So let us say if you have a match between Goran Ivansievic(sp?) and Kafelinikov on grass court the audience is most likely to see only aces being boomed from either end and little by the way of back hand cross-courts or fore-hand down-the-lines rally deciders.
