We know how hostile the Calcutta crowd is, and than you can multiply that by 100 considering that they were pissed off at Indian management including Chappell because gangu was missing. On top of that they were beaten in a most embarrasing way possible in an ODI. I was reading this article and could actually visualize whats written in it

Now we can imagine that this nasty crowd can be verbally abusive as well when they see chappell in front of them. So it is possible that chappell who was already frustrated showed his middle finger “in the heat of the moment”
.
However being the coach of the national side there is no justifcation of his gesture.
