CEDAR RAPIDS Mosque was one of the first Mosques built in the United
States.
It is rightly dubbed ‘THE MOTHER MOSQUE’ for that reason
In the 1900s Muslim Arabs stated coming to IOWA and felt the need of
a Mosque and a Community Center. On Feb 15 1934, this Mosque opened
its doors to the faithful for prayers.
Recent heavy rains and the floods in IOWA have played havoc with the
Mother Mosque.
Historic prized artifacts have been damaged in the basement of the
Mosque by severe flooding. The upper floor of the mosque was
recently renovated and was uneffected by the flood waters.
Imam Taha TAWIL states that the basement and its prized contents are
all destroyed beyound repair. The impressive history of the mosque
all laid in the basement in the form of dozens of videotapes with
oral histories of the Arabs who first came to this area. These have
all been destroyed.
WE PRAY THAT SOMETHING BETTER COMES OUT OF THIS TRAGEDY TO THIS
HISTORIC MOSQUE.
