Future recall: your mind can slip through time

**Okay so as I was going through the science and philosophy forum I realised that there’s not much on science and as a scientist I think we should all be aware of what is going on. Okay so I’m gonna post some neat studies that are currently being done in science.(Yep I said neat, I’m a scientist remember nerd, lol)

If you thought memory was all about making a record of the past, think again

IMAGINE your next vacation. You are relaxing on a beach, waves lapping at the shore, a cool breeze wafting through the trees and the sun caressing your skin. Fill in the details. What else do you see? Now, remember yesterday's commute.

Again, a picture emerges. You are on the train or in your car, or maybe just wandering from your kitchen to your desk. Can you remember what you were wearing? Perhaps you have forgotten that part already.

Without breaking sweat, you can hurtle yourself backwards or forwards in time in your mind’s eye - what is known as “mental time travel”. One of these visions really happened and the other was fantasy, yet the act of conjuring them up probably felt very similar. It’s as if, embedded somewhere in your brain, there is a time machine that can take you forwards and backwards at will.

Strange isnt it!!!

I have had such a thought along these lines in the past. I have called it 'The Substance of Thought'.

However, I have not made the blunder of assuming a future thought, I had called it an imaginary thought. It seems that memory and imagination occupies the same 'substance' in our minds eye. Therefore it is indistinguishable for us to determine what is a memory or what is imagination, except that we know where they are located in spacial memory.

It is the location of the thought rather than it's substance that allows us to determine what is real and what is imagination, but if things can alter those spacial locations then we can get quite a surprise, such as those people who get hypnotised or deluded by drugs or go a bit wayward.

This can also be used as an analogy for the limits of space. We can imagine space, but we find it hard to imagine the limits of space. However, we know that a thought is there we cannot say that the thought is limitless. Rather we know that the thought is limited and on this analogy space too as a thought must be a limited space, the boundaries of which will be hard for the mind's eye to comprehend.

Wow this is interesting stuff, I never even thought of it that was but the logic behind is definately right, ah but how wud this apply to short term and long term memory loss? I guess I would understand for long term memory loss but what about short term memory loss, you remember some stuff in the past and forget other things which are more recent.

This is a completely different thing. Above we are talking about how we store thought in places that help tell us about what type of thought they are, memories or imaginative thoughts. What you are asking here is how we retain the memories in short term and long term memories.

This field is more clear. People have seen that there is a certain amount of selectiveness in memory retention. Also, when we store our memories we do so in a way that emphasises feelings rather than a video account. Some people have strong short-term memories some have weak ones. Memory loss can be a result of trauma and/or selective subconscious archiving, which is probably similar to a zip file process on a hard disk.

Re: Future recall: your mind can slip through time

memory is a safe for the good feelings,
as it is for the sadness.
memory leaves no place for forgetting.
memory is a reminder of the future that was never considered.
memory is a past that is timeless.
memory evokes a sense of fair retribution or a closure.
it is up to the memory holder to store memories in a rational and positive manner, or get overwhelmed with the seemingly tainted view of the content of the memory. memory is a hope that leads to strengthen the faith of the faith
memory enables peaceful acceptance of an unfinished exchange of pact
memory leads to the notion of respite of joining in contentment
for trusting and respecting.
accurate memory of things positive, along with things unfair or negative or hasty or mistaken, allows for the feeling of possibility to become possible.
memory from before hits, but if the recent most memory is felt and known in all honesty, for what it is - good, then that memory can lead to improving the link between the memory and the memory object/s.
a fond memory can lead to reaching out to the loved one or the cherished one against all barriers.
& a memory that is adequately reasoned in a fair manner, and reckoned with, can elicit true warm emotions and pursue an aim, without any reservations.
and no one else can ever take happy memories away.

Reminds me of "total recall".

Re: Future recall: your mind can slip through time

Well, the time machine that propels our mind into the future is called imagination, and in some rare cases intuition (like deja vu's).

The time machine that takes us in the past is called memory and a JPG on our computer or a DVD or VHS can similarly be considered time machines too.
