Future of Urdu is Brighter in India than Pakistan ?

The question mark in the end denotes the intense desire within that the statement is utterly false and does not hold any ground.

But contrary to personal inclinations and attachements when i see the lacklusture attitude of the folks around, the mind is compelled to go with reason.

I dont remember when last time I have seen a ‘general’ mushaira. Not ‘Mazahia’, or related to any religious event. Just simple contemporary mushaira, where urdu poets shared their ‘Taza Kalaam’.

Its a pity that currently we have bucket full of urdu channels in pakistan and none of them bothers to show some literary programe.

Only Ptv gives some importance to literature and would honor great poets and story writers, musicians. Few of the excellent shows are **Khiraaj-e-Tehseen **(tribute to great pakistani artists), hosted by Anwar Maqsood and the other is Raat Gaye by Wasi shah and several other hosts.

Although these are very good shows and ptv is doing its part in showcasing the exuberance of Urdu literature and Art. But rest of the channels are plain disappointing in this regard :nook:

Re: Future of Urdu is Brighter in India than Pakistan ?

even i was wondering ki why dont they show mushairas on all these pakistani channels where are my parents are always busy on Saturday night watching mushaira on Etv Urdu in India...

we see all these singers/actors touring all over the world every year but havent seen any advertisement for mushaira being organised in UK/USA... its a pity

Re: Future of Urdu is Brighter in India than Pakistan ?

^ They do get organised overseas but remain low profile.. and mostly people with deep interest attend them only.

Lets have a quick look at historic sanctuaries for URDU in subcontinent

Haiderabad
Ilah Abad
Dehli
Aagra
Lakhnaow

In pakistan there is no historic affiliation of any city with urdu as such but produced remarkable urdu poets like Joan Aleya, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Ahmed Faraz, Qateel Shifayee, Munir Niazi, Habeeb Jalib, Ibn-e-insha, Farhat abbas Shah , Wasi Shah, Muhsin Naqwi, Ubaid Ullah Aleem etc.

In India we see only handful of noted urdu poets.

Now comming back to media. I will talk about ETV Urdu later. couple of years ago i bought few urdu books which were prited in India. One of them was critique on Ghalib. I found that book thoroughly researched and scholarly. Though it was very difficult as topics were quite dense and influence of farsi

Re: Future of Urdu is Brighter in India than Pakistan ?

So what is the prognosis ? General Mushaira's is a sign of bright future of Urdu ?
Urdu is supposed to be official language of Pakistan that should be more than enough to prove that Urdu will live till Qiamat as Pakistan will be there Inshallah till Qiamat.
The sign of progress of Urdu are plenty. There are websites now which are in Urdu font. There are interactive versions of Urdu daily newspapers from Pakistan on the Internet. There are some very powerful Urdu word processing software programs available now. Some one has come up with Urdu email system.
What else is needed as a proof of progress of Urdu in Pakistan ?

Re: Future of Urdu is Brighter in India than Pakistan ?

future is brighter in india than pakistan. period. :chai:

Re: Future of Urdu is Brighter in India than Pakistan ?

I don't know about that.

As much as I dislike the grammatically incorrect, colloquial Urdu spoken in many parts of Pakistan, the language still enjoys official patronage at the national level there. In India, on the other hand, Urdu has no official status outside a handful of states...and even within those states, you would be surprised by how few people still even know how to read the script...to the point where a lot of people are advocating abandoning Urdu script entirely and transitioning to Devnagiri.

Re: Future of Urdu is Brighter in India than Pakistan ?

^ very sad , but still urdu is just a language and by defination a mixture of various languages ....i wud like to see what exactly is pure urdu , the loss of which we are all concerned about

Re: Future of Urdu is Brighter in India than Pakistan ?

Interestinginly, Just recently I attended a live Mushaira in Faiz Aman Mela. It was pretty good. :k:

Comming back to Urdu. ETV urdu, The only *urdu *channel of subcontinent showed something interesting few years back. ( I only get to see this channel rarely, thanks to our cable operator )

On Iqbal day, there was a programe on Allama Iqbal and they did a little survey in colleges. This one poem which is like un-official anthem in India

Sarey Jahan se acha Hindostaaan hamara

They started asking student if they know who actually wrote this famous poem. They showed asking 20,30 students of various colleges in India no one answered correctly. Most of them had no clue and few suggested various poet including Rabinder nath taigore.

At last they showed one guy who gave the correct answer that poem is written by Allama Iqbal, the guy was doing MA urdu (i think)

Its a Pity that Indain are so ignorant about this great poet who gave them such a lovely anthem :nook:

Re: Future of Urdu is Brighter in India than Pakistan ?

every one knows the author is Iqbal, may be that asked Pakistani students

Re: Future of Urdu is Brighter in India than Pakistan ?

It was years ago, as you posted. ask anyone, who has some knowledge, and he/she will give the correct answer. the people who answered wouldnt even know the poets of or in which languages the national song and anthem were written. and anyways, Iqbal would have been more popular (the song is hugely popular, and he too is) if he hadnt suggested the two-nation theory.
and oh, that was Rabindranath Thakur/Tagore.

Re: Future of Urdu is Brighter in India than Pakistan ?

Most languages developed as 'mixtures' of other languages. Modern English is derived from a fusion of Old Germanic and French languages...that doesn't change the fact that it has set grammatical rules and an established vocabulary.
