Electric Hybrid was one of the first alternatives, but now there are more emerging options such as Ethanol, or FlexFuel. Basically it’s food for the engine because the fuel is extracted from corn i believe.
And hybrids actually do cost a chunk more to begin with. Until the technology is proven and mass-produced to bring down the costs over a period of years, it will be hard to say with facts that you actually saved a significant amount operating a hybrid vehicle.
Don’t have a hybrid. I always get the feeling it’s somewhat inferior to the gasoline-operated vehicles. Don’t know why 
Energy content of Ethanol is way less than what Petroleum has so your engine does not put out the same power when you burn Ethanol!

I thought hybrid was only cost efficient for people who travel a lot and by lot I mean a lot...
If you are someone who basically use a car for commuting b/w work home, groceries, and little bit recreation then you will find hybrid expensive as of now. And as of now it is not made for you.

A more effective and immediate solution to saving gas and getting the most mileage out of your car is available. While listening to morning radio, some expert was talking about lightening the load. Some folks like to keep stuff worthy of an entire closet in their trunks, that's a big no no. A light vehicle will waste less gas and get you more mileage. Also, get a tune-up if one is due because old or worn sparks plugs and/or cables can have an impact on the fuel-efficiency and mileage.
