Re: Future Computing

but if the future is a gaint-arse table then what about mobile devices? I think the future of consumer electronics is in handheld smartphones and not this...

Re: Future Computing

Well the purpose of this table is that MS can record ur eating habits (& may try to count ur teeth too) while consuming food on this table.

Re: Future Computing

Another thread on surface computing… I think it’s the fourth or fifth one here… tells you about the successful hype that Microsoft has created around what it calls its newest innovation.

The name “surface computing” might be new… but the concept isn’t. I think someone else on this forum posted clips from the 2005 / 2006 TED conference where Jeff Haan showcased his version of the same technology. His company calls it multi-touch computing.

I personally think that the technology has a lot of potential but it’s going to take 3 to 5 years before it realizes into something mature enough to be deployed at the end-users level.

In the near term, it’s probably going to be deployed in public kiosks, waiting rooms, lobbies etc.

The ability to ubiquitously talk to your devices is really key… but it will take time to agree upon standards to fix the dot codes to the undersides of cell phones, digicams etc.

MS thinks the initial cost is going to be around $5000 which is out of reach of the average consumer just yet.

To use Gartner’s Hype Cycle Model, the technology needs to ride the hype cycle… currently its at the peak of inflated expectations… it will subsequently fall through the trough of disillusionment and then rise again to its real plateau of productivity.

To me, the foreseeable applications of this technology for the average person would perhaps be in the office environment in boardrooms and brainstorming sessions… a lot of productivity gains can come of out of the use of this technology in simplex sessions.
