Re: Fusion Management ?
Aah… Fusion Management – is it catching on already as a buzzword?
I heard this term the first time last year in a conference and the idea was being promoted by a management consulting group. I figured – just like everything else… the idea will soon make it to the wider consulting arena, followed by popular press, then a few MNCs and academic circles etc.
Anyways, from what I know… fusion management is really nothing new… its just a trendy way to say that organizations need to better link and coordinate their business strategies and operational tactics to create synergies that can lead to significant performance improvements.
I come from an Operations background and a lot of people from my area think that fusion management is about combining the elements of reengineering, six sigma and TQM. Organizations which hold Quality as a core competency need to understand the linkages between various quality management programs and create a unifying vision for the entire company to achieve and sustain their market position that may be founded upon quality based differentiation.
That being said, the above is a rather narrow viewpoint. From what I understand, the main purpose of Fusion Management is to disentangle management from single-theme wisdoms that we so often witness in many organizations. A common example is how many organizations build upon “the customer comes first” philosophy… and this idea has recently been challenged by many strategists. On the outset, any organization needs to “fuse” their external strategy with internal strategy as the two are but inseparable.
Again, this idea isn’t really an innovation… it’s somewhat related to what a lot of other theorists and practitioners have said before. Perhaps, the closest theme is Kaplan and Norton’s Balanced Scorecard Approach and Strategy Map Approach where they support the idea of creating value through simultaneous and complementary themes comprising: financial, customer, processes, and learning and growth.
