funky kitchen /hallway

hi all, i need some opinions. i’ve always lived in boring houses. white walls, wood kitchen cabinets, beige/white floors. to my mom they were classic, to me they were too common. when i bought my own place it also came with white walls and white cabinets and beige floors. i have been wanting to change the look for a while and finally decided to spray pain the kitchen cabinets myself to a funky red, like the one in this link

my countertop is grey and i want to change it to a white shade. i want to keep the backsplash white as well. my appliances are all metal. now for the floors, i was thinking of doing the custom newspaper print like in this photo http://www.tileofspainusa.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Peronda-Newspaper.jpg

the area is small (i counted total of 90 tiles in the kitchen/entry way, 12"x12"). my entire family is extremely unhappy with what i am thinking of doing. they are starting to make me think it’ll look bad. does having red cabinets with newspaper print floor be too much? the rest of the condo is simple with plain grey carpet and white walls.

Re: funky kitchen /hallway

Yes - it will be too much with the newspaper print…you need a larger area to work both of those ideas.

What are your cabinets made of right now? If they are wood grain, just spray painting is not going to give you the look you are after, it’s just going to make it look like a barn door. You are going to have to be careful to properly sand and finish them, and use the correct type of lacquer finish, and even then I’m not sure if you’ll ge the same look.

Also, if you’re in a small condo right now, and have any hopes of moving in the future, such a bold change will be bad for your resale value.

Find other ways to bring your personality in to the kitchen with ways that are less in your face. I would opt for a bold paint job on the walls instead, and bring in other pops of color with funky tiles in the backsplash, maybe in a mosaic pattern. Keep your floors classic wood or change to a porcelain tile with interesting inserts in the pattern. Bring life to your cabinets by changing the finish to something less drastic that can blend with any design, and punch it up with interesting knobs and drawer pulls.

newspaper print wont look nice for kitchen…

Re: funky kitchen /hallway

i dont like the newspaper floor idea at all.. i would advice you to not go ahead with it. sorry  as for the red, it’s not my taste too (i like the classic stuff heheh) but i think it’s attractive! ive seen many homes like it! it’s kind of contemporary

Re: funky kitchen /hallway

dont spray paint ur cabinets! look for an interior designer or contractor who can advice u. why dont u paint some walls red ? it would look great too!

Re: funky kitchen /hallway

i like this way better!

Re: funky kitchen /hallway

spray painting the kitchen doors will not get you what you are looking for…and you will need a lot of prep work for it! We also have brown kitchen cabinets, we intend to paint them white but in summer so we can remove the doors, sand them down, prime, and then paint! If you need tips for that, I can share some links but then we are not going for glossy finish, just a lighter color to make it look spacious!

newspaper floor… you can pull that off ONLY if you have a huge kitchen.. 12X12 wont do it. I like khatti’s idea.. you can go for cork flooring, tiles, or even dark hardwood.. but newspaper flooring is too busy for a small kitchen!

Re: funky kitchen /hallway

So I painted my cabinets red. I took off the doors, sanded them, rented a paint sprayer from home depot and just went for it. I think they look gorgeous. I wasn’t doing it to increase the value of the condo. The cabinets need to be changed altogether because they are VERY OLD and dirty. I just wanted to give them a new makeover on a small budget. I will change them next year altogether. I have been looking into funky backslashes to go with my cabinets. So far all options seem pretty expensive. I would love more suggestions and would take photos and post them here later today to give you guys a better idea of what my kitchen looks like now.

i forgot to take the before photo. this photo is from when i first bought the place. i’ve changed all appliances since then. now i really want to change the backsplash to something funky.

Good job!

I was at lowes/home depot today and I saw this product…I think you could do this for real cheap and it would go well with your style!
