I want to funraise money for the earthquake victims and one of my professors is offering to give me some students who can help me in this campaign and he will give them the extra credit for his class if they work with me for 8 hours to fundraise money.. now the problem is that I am not sure how to use those students.. there would be like 5-10 students(I still have to tell him how many I need)!
I was thinking about selling candy bars in dorms or on campus.. is it going to be fruitful?
What should be the goal to start fundraising? minimum or maximum?
Gemini, fundraising can be as creative as you want it to be..but depends on the audience you're looking to raise funds from.
Are you talking about college students or highschool? What would be the feasible donation level?
You can use the students to sell candy bars, tshirts
You can have the students get donations of items from business and then auction off the items to raise funds.
You can have the students help you brainstorm of ideas that would go well in your school. Perhaps think of ways toget students AND their families to donate and more...
I'd also recomend doing your research and having the information redy on where you're giving hte money (what organization) etc...
Selling 'candy bars' would result in 'candy-like' results (size wise), setup a small booth close to library, admin office, other buildings i.e. engineering, biology etc, print pictures of victims, rescue efforts etc, you can promote your trusted welfare/relief agencies so if anyone doesn't want to drop their cash with you they can goto websites of those agencies and donate as per their convenience. This would be better IMO than selling candies/cookies.
A few days ago my friends organized a fundraising campaign at our university. Unfortunately I couldnt join them. They gathered alot of friends, whites and desis, it was a pretty big crowd and setup a table outside the University computerlab which is frequented by many students every day. They also had large banners reading "HELP EARTH QUAKE VICTIMS", "2.5 MILLION HOMELESS!!!", "MORE THAN 30,000 DEAD" and other banners saying something along these lines. It would be better if you could get some COLORFUL pictures of victims as captain said. Invite all your friends, the more people the better, this will attract other students aswell. Also you can lay candies & lollypops on the table. Get a few donation boxes, stick colorful printouts relating to the earthquake, could be pictures of victims as well. Some of the students participating in the campaign can carry these boxes and walk around within 50 meters of the table and collect donations. occasionally one of you can shout out "PLEASE HELP THE EARTH QUAKE VICTIMS" OR "WE NEED YOUR HELP", "DONATE FOR EARTH QUAKE VICTIMS". The idea is to put on a show and gather as many people as possible. Whether using pictures of victims/destroyed houses on banners or donation boxes, make use of WORDS.. short, clear and concise like "Help Earth Quake Victims".
Make sure you choose your location and timing wisely, the amount of donation depends on the number and kind of people frequenting that place. If you have enough students you can campaign at multiple locations. If you are short on volunteers see if you can get some people from MSA and PSA to volunteer (they are always ready). This way you can organize your campaign at several places. Last but not the least, if possible try to get volunteers who are not timid and wont hesitate to shout out or ask for donation.
I wish you best of luck and do let us know how the campaign went.
You can do a charity dinner...You can charge per person $3-4 bucks, try not to charge too much, otherwise college kids wont show up. Also try to get your school faculty involved as well.
After hurricane Katrina, the school I work at set up an online silent auction. Faculty, parents, and staff offered up items and everyone bid on each others. We ended up making a significant amount of money for such a small school, and the different auction items encouraged community bonding as well.
Some examples of auction items (some serious, some silly)
-a pastel drawing or professional photo from an art teacher
-teachers treating students to a movie and ice cream, or cooking dinner for some students, sponsoring coffee, etc
-students offering time to tutor other students, or offerring baby-sitting, etc
-teachers giving away ten minutes of nap time in class, or extensions on work, etc
amelie: Thanx.. these are college students and I am sure alot of people are willing to help, but we just have to organize everything before it happens.. I was thinking of doing one day thing so it won't burden all these students and I am sure students can devote a day to get extra credit that counts 5% of their course grade.. I am so thankful to the professor who is offering this in his class of 100+ people.. hopefully a great number of volunteers will turn out!
Captain.. you are right, it won;t be much but I was thinking in terms of something is better than nothing btu now I have found useful ideas here so I am going to drop this idea and use the one that you and sugar free has suggested about setting up a booth..Thanks alot!
Sugar free: Thank you so much for almost organizing everything for me.. I am thinking about setting up a table in the campus center taht is where mostly students pass by to go to classes, to eat, and almost everywhere else. I have contacted our uni's MSA but honestly they are not proving to be very helpful.. I wonder why but I am going to make another effort and ask them to atelast help me in setting up a table as they do have an experience in this that would guide me through.. I think I should ask my prof for atleast ten students... he is going to announce it in his class and then will ask the volunteers to email me.. I will make sure he announces that I need people who won't hesitate to shout out for raising money! If I get more stuents, I would make sure either I do the booth twice in a week or at two different places on the same day.. Thanx alot for your input!
ZulfiOKC: I am going to arrange an iftar party at the local masjid and will keep the donation box there, since we are not allowed to charge for iftari but hopefully community members will give out osme donation as I will ask beforehand!
Sahar: Thanks dear..I dun have any skills to take care of anything online or so and also I am not sure how people are gonna react to the earthquake since its quite different than Katrina if I do something online.. I better do it with people walking and talking around and make them donate some money! I 'll save your idea for future since it seems to attract quite alot of audience!
I just spoke to my mamoN and he was telling me that in our own city pathans are selling "made in USA" tents taht they have got eitehr from the president's relief fund or orther organizations that have sold out the tents for money, so I am not sending any tents or any shipment through PIA to the president's relief fund but I will collect moneya dn send it to my mamoN who is personally gonna take the stuff there and give it to the people who deserve it.
He was telling me that their group has their camp outside Muzafarabad and everyday 5-10 ppl visit the disaster zone and ask people about their specific needs and then they give out the receipt with their signature and stamp and ask those deserving people to get the supplies from their camp such as some one needs two quilts or a blanket or some food, etc. I am gonna take this step and just collect money to send it to those people. So, ask people in your area to collect donations and then appoint a person in Pakistan to take it to the victims.. oh god, we can't even trust our givt in this critical time of need.. sad indeed :(
