From Darfur to Wana: Lessons learned

Millions of Darfarians displaced, thousands raped, and many more killed. Here is a good article for everyone to read. Some lessons stand out though.

  1. With no effective police force, all of Darfur’s communities armed themselves.

  2. Police had neither fuel for their Land Rovers nor bullets for their decrepit rifles. If there was a serious crime, the district police chief would come to Sheikh Hilal’s tent, sit humbly on a Persian carpet on the sand, and ask the Sheikh (read Jirga for Wana) to find the culprit.

  3. Abdel Wahid Noor … attacked a police station on February 26, 2003, to take back the lost weapons. This was the spark that set Darfur afire.

  4. 1987 saw the first augur of Darfur’s descent into violence and the collapse of the police force

So the bottom line is to set up a police force in Wana as soon as the military operation is complete.

May Allah help innocent people of Wana who were about to be destroyed by MAToo PiThoos.
