From Akbar to ShahRukh Khan

Inter religion marriages during Mughal era were a way to gain support from different tribes / communities, etc. A way to strengthen rule.

There is a perception that Muslim actors of bollywood (Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Saif Alikhan) are probably going through a varied form of this concept. portraying themselves as not connected to their religious ideolgies to gain acceptance among masses, etc.

Do you agree with perception / misconception?

What about the overall Indian population? Have the inter religion marriages got acceptance among common people?

Re: From Akbar to ShahRukh Khan

I cant comment on policy behind these kind of marriages, but inter religion marriages are still a taboo among middle class Indians. And is expected to remain so in near future.

Read this ages ago, somewhat relevant: An Indian Muslim’s Blog: News, Views & Urdu Poetry Website: When Hindu girls elope with Muslim boys or vice-versa…

Re: From Akbar to ShahRukh Khan

the boy did not accept islam....but the couple live just next door to her parent's home..they have good relation as girl was the only child of her parents

Re: From Akbar to ShahRukh Khan

What kind of problems such couples face? Are their any rules protecting such couples?

Re: From Akbar to ShahRukh Khan

so the situation is still same, which was summarised by Bano Qudsia in her latest novel about 1940’s India in the words ‘both communities can’t assimilates in totality as they can’t eat to gether, there utensils can’t be shared. They can’t mingle through inter-marriages’.

Re: From Akbar to ShahRukh Khan

It depends on the region where this act is committed....

the class and society to which this couple belong....

In india law does not sto people from having interfaith marriage...

Re: From Akbar to ShahRukh Khan

what do you mean by region? is it acceptable in urban and not acceptable in rural. or there is another distinction of areas where interfaith religion is acceptable?

Re: From Akbar to ShahRukh Khan

Acc. to Quran:

A Muslim man can marry only a chaste woman from people of book. The children of this marriage are to be Muslims.

A Muslim woman cannot marry anyone but a Muslim man.

Re: From Akbar to ShahRukh Khan

It broadly refers to people who are descendants in an unbroken male line from a common male ancestor.

Re: From Akbar to ShahRukh Khan

gothram means bloodline from father side, my gothram is Gandhar, so all Jats who have Gandhar gotram becomes my brother and sister as we are descendent of same ancestor from my father's side. My hubby's is Vishwamitra, so all vishwamitra gotra brahmins of any region of India becomes his brother and sister and my children cannot marry any of the human carrying same gothra :)
