Friend has a problem

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine is having trouble coming out of the closet. What advice would you give him in my position?

Tear open the door (k)

Re: Friend has a problem

I wouldn't. I have no clue how he feels, so why would I give advice about stuff I have no clue about?

Re: Friend has a problem

Hmm tough.. as a straight person it's impossible to understand the social pressure and discrimination gay people face. One of our good friends is gay. He tried being straight (he had a gf in college), but realized very quickly that he simply isn't attracted to girls at all. That was also when his parents starting asking him about marriage. After realizing that pretending to be straight is a lose-lose (for himself as well as the girl his parents choose for him), he came out to them and his sister. Obviously it was a huge shock to them - his poor mom didn't even know what gay meant! It was a tough time for the family but he explained things to them using websites and books dedicated to explaining "gayness" to parents of a gay child.

Your friend could browse these websites for tips. And maybe confide in more sympathetic/open minded family members first.

Whatever happens please support him/her and definitely discourage them from getting into an arranged marriage and ruin 2 lives in the process. Marriage is NOT a "cure" for gayness.

Lassi would be pretty refreshing right about now

What's this pogo thing that people keep mentioning online. I've seen it in comments on various Facebook pages as well?
