I went to the indian store and saw a big packet of already fried onions. They didn’t look like onions, but just itty bitty brown flakes. Anyways, has anyone ever used packaged fried onions? Im so confused about how to use them! I’m looking to save time cuz the chopping and frying of fresh onions literally take forever.
Oh and I remember some auntie told me that you add the package onions after your salin or chawal are done…and that just confuses me more.
ruiner ! i only use such fried onion when i'm fed up of cooking & working in kitchen as i don't like it's taste , or may be cuzz i haven't developed one ......... but i know lots of girls n ladies who use it and r happy the way it taste .
that's how a friend of mine suggested it's best way of use , take fried onion , put raw garam masala fry it a bit , add ginger/garlic, add fried onion , add fresh frozen tomatoes , cover it till masala is ready ( takes 8-10 min) now add whatever veggie or meat u wanna cook in it , easy isn't it ?
I think the fried onions are a great timesaver on those days when you're running short on time. Say you want to make a simple salan. Take the fried onions, and when you place them in the degchi, add a little water and a little oil and let them soften up over medium heat. When they're mushy, treat them as you would a fresh onion that's been browned. Then you can add your tomatoes, spices, etc.
They're also great as a haleem condiment, or with daal.

oh man, the smell of frying onions is just heavenly.. :D
Oh I do all my cooking with fried onion. What I do is heat the oil, add ginger/garlic paste and then after two mins or so I add fried onions, all the spices, etc and make masala. I never had any problem. Actually I just got done making Allo Ghost and Okra. My mom would even make the salan or pulao for the masjid event or any other desi gettogether with fried onions. Never had any bad experience. The food is always good. Just make sure you use a good brand. Hanif is pretty decent and there are couple others, I just don't remember the names. Oh and if the onions don't feel crisp then they are not of good quality.
^ and in all yogurt based dishes that require fried onions.
But you can use 'em in plain salans by adding two tomatoes, some friend onions, dhania mirch and blending the mixture to make a sauce rather than doing it the long way.
I use fried onions in Biryani all the time. The only time I have ever used them in anything else is when I was on a shopping trip and hubby was home and said we had unexpected guests - so SIL told me to do as follows when I got home:
Wash chicken and put in saucepan with all masala, 2 tins of tomatoes and ready fried onions. Cover and cook. Add potatoes later. And add water as desired throughout
And you know what? I didn't do it - hubby did and it tasted great!!!!!!!
Never done it since, but I have that recipe tucked away safely!!!!!
A bit off topic I know but...
I have a question for ya all.please answer with honesty.
if a child is born in say UK to parents of Pakistani origin, and when that child becomes a teenager and is brought back to "parents homeland"
How do you desi people consider that child?
do you consider him an outcast?
do you hate him?
do you pity or envy him?
