Defending champion Myskina defeated in first round by a relative unknown.
Federer advances (as expected) to second round. New kid on the block, spanish teenager Rafael Nadal is playing in his first ever french open and that too as a favourite has also advanced.
nadal has had a gr8 clay court season so far, i think he'll be a tough competitor this year alongside many spanish baseliners, who just raise their game when playing on clay.
still federer 4 me is very much the man 2 beat. i think lieyton hewitt pulled out becoz of a rib injury. there is also a french teenage sensation who is being tipped to make a impact @ the open. brit hopeful tim henman through to the 2nd round.
agassi first major casualty of the open. apparently he got injured through 3rd or 4th set, hence the way the last 2 set’s were a stroll for his opponent. marat safin is also through to the 2nd round. brit hopeful grego lost his 1st round. ]
justin henin + sharapova also through but were less than convincing.
^ Dont call them Greg and Tim hopefuls LUC, Henman and a grandslam are probably not meant to be together. He lost the chance of winning one in his golden years and now the chances are even less.
they r the best we have at the mo' :D] so gotta keep backing the lads. although alex bogdanovic is coming thropugh the ranks, our next best hope after tim henman.
Roddick is out after a great five-setter. And just like last year, no american could make past the third round in Paris. Since the start of open era in 1967, only three americans have won French open.
Nalbandin ousted. Federer has beaten Moya with ease but Nadal/Grosejan match has been marred by controversy as crowd acted angrily to a over rule by umpire. Match will be compelted tomorrow.
Did anyone see the Safin - Robredo 5 setter? Amazing exchanges. The Spaniard has a tremendous forehand. Pity he lost in the quarterfinals to Davydenko.
^ I did. It was indeed an epic encounter. Actually these spaniards and argentinians raise their game quite a few notces in french open where americans and others are found wanting.
federer couldn't get his forehand to work against nadal for some reason but credit to nadal, he ran ragged and played brilliantly. his form on clay has been superb all season and i can't c him not winning his 1st major now.
What a final! Nadal returned everything Puerte threw at him. Some superb exchanges with down-the-line, cross-courts and drop shots galore. Remember Puerta was unseeded!
Puerte lost it in the 4th set when serving for the set at 5-4 and 40-15.
^ Puerta is an incredible player as well. But Nadal has surely rocked the tennis world. It would be really exciting how he fares on grass courts grandslam. But he surely is a man to watch in coming seasons.
24 consecutive wins on clay court is unbelievable and unrealistic. Nadal is the future. I mean to take out Federer, who just seems so unbeatable at times, is amazing.
The story in Nadal-Roger game was what happened to Federer in the 4th set. Roger was serving up 3-1 looking like he was going to send it to 5 sets until a fan screamed right as Roger was about to serve, throwing him off. Federer double faulted and wasn't the same for the rest of the match. He didn't win another game after that point.
