All great nations were built either with the sweat and blood of it's own people, or with imported slaves (such as Rome). The Great Wall [of China] is often referred to as the longest graveyard - as the tired and the sick workers dropped dead, they were buried right into the wall. But how many love to visit the Pyramids, St. Petersburg and The Great Wall.
France has a system that is great for it's people, and therefore, not great for France. Most jobs in western Europe are unionized. Why do you think Airbus is falling behind and losing orders?
America is the opposite: It's broken unions, sacrified workers for sake of corporations. Many unionized plants end up shutting down and relocating to start over with non-union labor. In the few unions that remain, almost everytime union workers strike, there is a court-mandated return to work order.
So, the real issue is: Is France, and ultimately western Europe, still want to remain somewhat socialist?

well sarkozy is for liberalising the french economy and the socialists lost so i guess things are going to change there...

Royal is a daddy-hating socialist nut job. Sarkozy has a progressive, modern agenda for France. I am glad Sarkozy won.

It seems that even French have turned their backs on both the French Revolution and Republic.
Power-to-the-people concept reached in it's peak during the 1970's, before Americans began turning the clock back in the 1980's.
If Taliban wanted to turn the clock back 200 years, Americans want to take the world back 2,000 years.

Royal didnt know how to take the pulse of the common people....the immigration problem. Any European party or leader who neglects to address the issue of immigration, has lost the game in advance. Thats what happened. Its logic when Le Pin was also candidate and having a good % of the voters behind, nationalism and better job opportunity are simply key words.....
