Freelance Programming

:salam:

I’m looking for freelance programming projects to work on in my free time. Something that takes not more than ten or so hours a week.

Are there any online places that give out such projects? I’m located in Pakistan, are there any local software houses that give out such projects?

Please mention if you or someone you know has worked with them and if they are reliable.

Thanks a lot.

wa-alekum-assalam
there are many places on net out there, came across many of them but dont remember except 1s name, that is ITMoonligher.com try this one out. when i had free time i didnt knew about this site, now when i get offer to work on many projects, i dont have enuf time
u can always get a project from local software houses too, check out small software development companies who dont have large teams to work on those projects.
sometimes i do get these projects also, i can fwd them to u if i get one

if u dont mind telling, what is the job in software development which gives u that much free time  i’m jealous

Aceones! thanks a lot brother for your detailed advice.

i'm not working as a software programmer right now, though my degree is in that field. thats why actually i want these freelance projects so i can gain some programming experience and remain up to date with software programming.

i dont want large software projects though. atleast for now. thats why i am hesitant to work for local software houses. i dont actually want another job. i want this to be just a hobby kind of thing you know...

plus i want to do this from home, i dont want to go to the office waghera to work on the stuff or meet with any teams...i mean i am not looking for a big professional commitment here...just something small...you know..

Do please let me know if anything comes up...My PM feature is disabled so please post in this thread...I check this forum regularly...

Thanks again :)

welcome,
to try for a job somewhere is a better idea to learn it in more professional way
khair i'll let u know in this thread

thanks :)

i'm already working full time actually bro...i get off at six pm. so if i do a part time software programming job after that for a couple of hours, (i did consider this possibility too, and i still haven't completely ruled it out) i'm gona have no life and will become a zombie for lack of relaxation...
and i like my current job and don't want my main full time job to be of software programming either...but i do want to do something that isn't very demanding and is on the side as i do want to keep in touch with programming...you know...

if you post your skills and specialties, then, it maybe easier to keep an eye for any projects. I think, keep up the networking, since that's how most of teh jobs and projects materialize.

But, it would be hard for anyone to hire your services, if you could work only the maximum of five hrs. In any case, one would like to have you at least 20 hrs a week, minimum. I work extensively with offshore developers, and currently, our company has two developers on contract in Pakistan. When you are working remotely with individuals, then it's hard for a company to gain maximum potential unless there's lots of commitment from the offshore developers, since, the work poses different challenges than working with the local team members.

Usually, offshore outsourcing is done on monthly salary or project basis . When a company has multiple projects, then they tend to offer a contract based on a set time limit for instance, three months. I strongly suggest that if you are interested in attaining contracts from offshore, then arrange your schedule properly, and keep networking. You will find it definitely, inshallah.

Thanks for the response outlaw. And arranging my schedule properly is something I definitely have in mind inshallah. Thanks for that advice.

I do realise that the time I can spare is not as much as employers would normally want and I could stretch it to a maximum of ten hours a week but not more than that since I don't want this to be a big commitment, neither a secondary source of income, but just a way for me to not forget my programming skills. I want to put the base minimum time in this and I think five hours should even be okay for this purpose. However because I might not be able to get any employers for that much time commitment only, I thought about it and think maybe I can spare ten. Ten solid hours of programming can produce decently large programs and I'd really prefer not to stretch it beyond that though.

I'm not necessarily looking for offshore stuff. I don't mind doing stuff for local places. In fact I realise offshore stuff has a lot of other aspects involved, such as trust and communication issues, and I don't want to be in a sketchy situation at any cost, as some people I know have landed in such situations. At this point I'm open to offshore and local projects.

I haven't programmed for months now but I feel I could look at a couple of my old programs and get back on track. I'm willing to put in time and effort but I am not so confident right now that I could just take up a very big project on my own if there is a deadline and no team members for me to consult.

My strongest and soundest programming skills are in C and Java.

I have worked somewhat with SQL and Lisp too.

I have never worked in C++ but I think I can learn it since I know C and Java.

I also want to learn new things like C net and multimedia tools. I could learn them on my own but I know I'll never get around to it unless I have the pressue of an impending deadline and a project.

you could get some projects thru http://www.agaveblue.net/
