BSF DIG killed in held Kashmir Tuesday, Dhul-Qi’dah 29, 1430
SRINAGAR: Militants blew up a jeep and killed India’s Border Security Force (BSF) Deputy Inspector General (DIG) OP Tanwar, and wounded two paramilitary soldiers in Indian-held Kashmir (IHK), a police officer said on Monday.
He said the attack occurred 20 miles south of Jammu. Tanwar was visiting the region close to the Line of Control hours after the militants and paramilitary soldiers exchanged fire there overnight, the officer said.
Two Indian Army solders were killed in a separate gunfight with militants in Keran sector.
A militant was also killed in the rugged mountainous region.
Separately, a commander of Hizbul Mujahedeen was killed in the Pulwama region. ap

WASHINGTON: The human rights group Amnesty International has urged US President Barack Obama to take up the issue of human rights abuses in Indian-held Kashmir (IHK), during his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday.
On the eve of Singh’s visit to Washington, **Amnesty International Executive Director Larry Cox said Obama’s should directly communicate Washington’s concerns about human rights abuses to the Indian prime minister.
The organisation observed, “even though India is the world’s largest democracy… the government not only fails to prevent human rights abuses, but also shelters members of security forces from facing justice.”** app
Three killed in IHK clash Monday, Dhul-Hijjah 6, 1430
SRINAGAR: Two militants and an Indian soldier were killed during a gunfight along the Line of Control (LoC), the Indian military said on Sunday.
“The fighting erupted late on Saturday when a group of militants tried to cross the LoC in Poonch district,” an army spokesman said, claiming that soldiers had foiled an infiltration bid.
The latest clash came as regional police chief Kuldeep Khuda told reporters late Saturday night that about 700 militants were active in Indian-held Kashmir. Khuda said the number of active militants included people who had earlier surrendered to troops. afp
