Freedom of speech..sometimes?

So your aim is to attack and degrade gay people?

Cricketplaay has naswered most ofwhat I was going to write.

But I would like to add that once we have sent soemthign off to print its PHYSICALLY THERE and it often can be in a palce where it is out of reach to us.

Facebook is different - it has a report abuse button - when a certain number of complainst are registered the admin look into it. They have time and time again pulled down many communities. There is a community called "F**k islam" - if there was a community called "we dont like Islam" most muslims would have nothign to complain about. People have a choice to like what they want.
What is the point of the eport abuse button when it is used selectively. Start an anti-Jewish or offensive to Jews community - see how long you last!

Facebook is potentially accessible to EVERYONE so therefore it has a responsibility to make sure that it uderstands cultures around the world.

If you look around facebook theres no shortage of hate communities - most directed at Muslims

*At times Muslims have to draw a line. They dont have to bomb anyone, they dont have to riot and destroy their ow livelihoods but yes if somethign is not of their standard they as players of this world have to stand up. *

If they dont stand up they will just become passive actors in this world and will neevr contribute anything positively.

*Why is it always that Muslims should compromise and be apologetic? Why cant we stand with Pride and say look we stood up for what we believe in. *

:k:

The problem with a lot of people who are painting this in terms of "you must be a cowardly, liberal, part time Muslim if you oppose the ban" versus "I'm good because banning things is the only way to teach them a lesson"

those people who are splitting Muslims into groups are confusing a dignified way of doing things with a apologetic way of doing things. By all means withdraw from facebook, by all means campaign and protest. By all means make alternatives to facebook or orkut. By all means point out the double standards.., but DON'T allow people who oppose bans on principle to get trashed, don't use it as a justification for mob violence. DON'T allow one ban to create a precedent that whenever anything you dislike happens you just ban it..

Re: Freedom of speech..sometimes?

It would teach them a lesson if Muslims boycotted Facebook. The whole world revolves around money. If Facebook stands to lose money from the boycott then it will re-think its policies. Too many people have started living through Facebook and this is why when it comes to hate communities it has to play a very fair role.

Muslims need to make themselves heard in a dignified way and the boycott has been more than dignified. Thankfully we are only begin ridiculed because we have done a peaceful boycott and not on TV screens huring down our own country.

I remember the guy from Luton who attended a protest against the Danish cartoons in London dressed in suicide bomb style straps - he was jailed for that. He did not have a real bomb on him and he claimed he was practicing his freedom. it is just freedom sometimes......

The sad part is that we may see a trend where things are banned because they dont agree with the ruler as we have seen in the past when both Zardari and Musharaf blocked certain websites (in Zardari's case it may have been just programmed). I don't agree wit that.

Re: Freedom of speech..sometimes?

go Zakk :k:

Re: Freedom of speech..sometimes?

the precedent of banning things which attacks our religion is great

if marginalization tomorrow is a worry, then who do you put your trust in? Allah swt has told us where to put our trust

Re: Freedom of speech..sometimes?

This might sound too extreme for some but this is what I live by:

Would you support a business which has insulted your mother? The business that did nothing to fire the manager/clerk who insulted your mother. You would be happy to go back to that business? Facebook is a business. Nothing more than that. You sign up and become active, you are giving them money in one way or another. If you still don't get it, then your ego is bigger than your love for Rasulullah(SAW).

on the opposite if anything is said about jews , one word, and their is world condemnation. those people don't forget anti semitism and other things. they make you regret you said/did such things

and we argue about banning FB, yes its a social medium but When it comes to your religion and respectable people of it are holy and sacred. how does someone go about dissing the most noble person of the faith, and to think they can get away with it. To an extent, it right that Muslims are protesting, and the lady did the right thing by removing the page and apologized.

go Ricki, go Ricki!

Yes, because these people are alive! Muhammad SAW maybe alive in your heart but he is dead and so is Jesus, Moses, Buddha, Krishna, etc....

People do make fun of Jews, homosexuals, and disabled people all the time, and it IS immoral. Muhammad SAW was an Islamic leader for Muslims not for the world, do not take away their right to speak whatever the hell they want. At least they are not killing anybody because of it. It's funny how Muslims will wreak havoc upon seeing drawings of Muhammad (why search for them?) and then feel absolutely nothing about a woman who's been raped and killed. Where do we draw the line? Where's morality? Where are your priorities?

It's ridiculous to ban facebook. If anyone is deeply offended by cartoons, they can delete their own accounts but people who don't have issue with it shouldn't be deprived of an amazing social networking site.

Aamazing social networking? There are plenty more just as good if not better!

If anyone believe in freedom of speech then go and set up any group which may counter/offend or give a different view on Jewish/Israeli affairs and we will see how long it stays open.

To be honest its not the drawings that are offensive even htough most were crude and sexual, its the hypocrisy of facebook and it has a policy not to allow hate communities directed at specific groups including religion.
