I have heard Dr. Mubarak Ali few times and he is man of knowledge...Unfortunately it would take time to clear out the mud which is been there for ever...
Now its about time that we should admit everyone make mistakes but as writer suggested old habits die late...Would take some time...I have read some of Dr.Mubaik Ali books and one is about Tariq bin Ziyad was awesome...He always have references and some good points too, not like general historians which make history like All Good episodes of a drama...
He is in the pool of the people who beleives
" If you want to see the change, be that change".
Salman,
Heard Prof Mubarak Ali on Geo/Ary talk shows, his views and knowledge of history are truly impressive. Will like to read his books, any that u can recommend.
I've heard Dr. Mubarak Ali and read his books. He is a truly humble man as a great intellectual should be. His view of history is objective and rational. This is pathetic that "Mutalia Pakistan" has left little room for divergent view of history.
Well ShweetDreams, I've read three of his books "Tarikh awar Muashira", "Tarikh awar Falsafiyai Tarikh", and "Akhiri Ahadi Mughlia Ka Hindustan". He has written a lot of books, however. I suggest you also read books by Ali Abbas Jalalpuri and Syed Sibti Hassan.
I respect Mubarak Ali immensely..even when I dont agree with him (I find his opinion towards pashtun history harsh..yet even so it is an argument of perspective) as an intellectual people like him need to be protected as they are the ones who promote debate.
The recent attacks on him are disgusting..people need to organise and help him..FG if you have any info on groups trying to help him ..do tell.
ShweatDreams, which book would you like would depends on your interest and base knowledge; If you are interested in abstract knowledge and concentrated ideas then you should read "Tarikh awar Falsafiyai Tarikh" otherwise read "Akhiri Ahadi Mughlia Ka Hindustan".
Someone has commented here that he swings more the the extreme-left. The fact is, the intellectaul environment in Pakistan is so radically right-tilted that even slight deviation from prevailing thought seems heritic.
Sorry for being late...Don't check out forum pretty often these days..
Suggestions for his books...hmm it's kind of tough as i have read him few years back when i was back home...but you can try "Jahangir Ka Hindustaan"...
Hmm Dr. Mubarak Ali has his own views and i am not agreed with him all the time but what i respect is his different approach...
Another writer which really clicked my mind was Mumtaz Mufti(not related to history) but he sounds Secular sometimes but amazing...try his "Talaash".
Personally i really like Nasim Hijazi...he is man of his own...Bcoz of him i developed the taste to read the history books and some of his books was really Amazing Like "Qaisar-o-Qisra", "Mohammad Bin Qasim","Yousuf Bin Tashqain","Aakhri Maarka" etc...
Dreamz there is a book i read was good about Tariq Bin Ziyad and it's called "Damishq ke Qaid khaane mein " is excellent and not leaning towards anyone, especially i remember Tariq words in the book" Aaj tumhaari misaal Yateem ke dastarkhuwaan per Miskeen ki si hai, peeche tumhaare samandar aur aage shahadat hai..." and writer is Inaayat-ullah .
One more excellent book was "Khalid bin Waleed" , though i don't remember the writer but was an excellent book...
I didn't read much about Islamic historythough but Two books which i always love to keep in my collectiion and are at the top in my favourite Islamic history books are
"Al-Farooq" by Shibli Nomani
and "Khilafat-o-Malookiyat" by Maulana Maududi....
