Free wireless broadband from google
Is there such a thing in the works?
I have heard google has been testing this in California for last several months.

Yup u heared it right, and i think they have already implemented that stuff in some cities in bay area.
Actually google is planning to have the thin clients with free internet connectivity. So that people can use the software right of the server. I hope u understand what i mean. Its a big business thingy that google is experimenting with.
Google is all about trying new things.
I also heared that google is also buying the Fiber Optics that are not in use, all over the country, so that the free wireless internet can be provided country wide.
I'll update if i'll find out some thing new.

Who will pay for this supposedly free internet?
I guess more spyware / ads in the offing? :D

Is it already here? I don't think so. Google made a proposal to the city of San Francisco to provide free high-speed city-wide Wi-Fi. However, their proposal is just one of several other proposed by other companies. I am not even sure if the city even awarded the contract to Google.
The free Wi-Fi will be subsidized by targetted online ads, ofcourse, so its mostly for those who can't afford any other kind of paid high-speed online access.

Unfortunatly, it will be atleast 10 years before this can be implemented in my side of teh world.
