Re: Free will vs preordained destiny
It's like this, I think ...
If you eat healthy, you will be healthy
If you eat unhealthy, you will be unhealthy
Choice is a free will, but consequence is preordained.

Re: Free will vs preordained destiny
^Do you realize that makes no sense? It's like asking to solve a math problem. There is only one result. Does it matter how you arrive at it? If you are going to end up obese because that's been predetermined, why bother eating healthy? If the consequences have been predetermined, it doesn't matter WHAT you CHOOSE to do. The end result is what's predetermined.
Re: Free will vs preordained destiny
Ughhhh...see you are not getting it. Pre-ordained in terms of the laws of physics, the universe, the climatic changes, the earth, the birth ,death of a certain person. BUT for everything in b/w we have a choice. Allah might know our choices but He isn't forcing it on us. And if we pray and repent then He is Merciful and He forgives us and can change anything if He pleases.
Anyway I am too tired to debate on this. :(
This makes better sense that what everybody else has been saying. But then again going by your logic, it leaves no room for preordained destiny to exist at least for humans.
Re: Free will vs preordained destiny
On one hand you guys are saying Allah knows our choices and on the other hand you say that we can choose otherwise...So in essence Allah does not really know our choices...

No Allah does not know our choices. He has not pre-ordained them.
He has set certain irrevocable laws in place and allowed us to make decisions. That is why we are responsible for our choices and answerable for our actions.
Re: Free will vs preordained destiny
^Doesn't it then clash with the idea of omniscient God?
Re: Free will vs preordained destiny
no it actually doesn't. Allah does know most of the things and we all have preordained destiny. BUT he has given us a free will to choose from different options in front of us.
There's a difference b/w knowing something and dictating something. Like for instance you buy presents for your best friend and your sister (e.g an amethyst necklace and a zircone ring) You ask your sister to choose first. Knowing her you know she'd go for the amethyst one because she loves purple. But you gave her a choice b/w the two. If you were to dictate her or force your decision on to her you would have shown her both and said I chose the amethyst necklace for you.
SO this is the difference. We have a free will to decide what we would do..but the ultimate power to enact on that will is in Allah's hands. :) That's the reason when we decide on doing something we say InshaAllah i.e. if Allah wills !
Re: Free will vs preordained destiny
Your reply makes sense only if you believe that Allah has knowledge of Most of the things but not All..
Re: Free will vs preordained destiny
I believe in both. I believe that you have freedom of choice. But everyone has an end destiny. An analogy - You have multiple rivers and its up to you to choose which one you want to sail down. But it doesnt matter which one you pick cuz they all converge in the end anyway. The only thing that will be different is route. Person X will have one route, person y will have another. Youll both meet in the end but its up to you to embrace ur route
Re: Free will vs preordained destiny
Once we recognize our insignificance, we will come to terms with this concept.

so very true!
I always wonder why people are so obsessed with this subject.
At the end of the day why does it matter?
