Free Wifi

In Mountain View, CA but soon in your neighbourhood.

I predict that by the end of 2007, city wide wifi towers will be as common as cell phone towers in US and all major cities will have considerably good/reliable coverage.

By 2010, we will probably be able to drive from Miami to Maine without an interruption of service.

Re: Free Wifi

Great news !

Re: Free Wifi

by 2010 wifi will be obsolete.

Re: Free Wifi

so will Gupshup

Re: Free Wifi

^what about whiteys?

Re: Free Wifi

Also Google is working on providing the WiFi free all over the country and to also provide the thin clients with it. So that applications can be used over the internet.

Google is also coming up with some more new ideas. Some one told me that they r also buying the unused fiber optic all over the country for the high speed internet connectivity.

But main Question is .... will we be able to store all of our info. over the net and will we be willing to share it will ...... God knows who ...????

Re: Free Wifi

AJ, open google and input search “warchalking”.

Also read this article from Wired News. And then there are *other/i means of free wi-fi. Seach in Comp Talk for more.

Re: Free Wifi

Free Wifi just means a lot of ads in your browsing experience. If Google is the one providing then it'll probably be less obnoxious. Anyone else will just fill half your window with garish ads.

Re: Free Wifi

It will be hard to replace Wifi specially when it is going to have secured WiMAX support with microwave and satellite network mesh all over the North Amercia very soon.

Re: Free Wifi

now nwo stu dont take it so personally
gupshup will evolve with times available technology and media

wifi faces strong challenges from emerging technologies. As a matter of fact if you have attended any of the wifi alliance’s conferences. I happened to be a panel member and speaker last year, they are fairly open about wifi, as we know it being obsolete by 2010.

Re: Free Wifi

Free Wifi means commericals while you surf, google will obvious customize them based on your 'surfing' history that they'll store. One internet ad tool that will being coming out is pop up ads that you click on which connects you (via VOIP) to a call center so you can ask more questions about the product or actually place an order.

Re: Free Wifi

I wasn’t taking it personally fraudz. Like you, I just meant to imply that all technology morphs over time. Although I’m sure the wireless broadband network of the future will include some aspects of wifi/802.11, it will (as you said) lilely be unrecognizable. Similarly, I’m sure online forums like GUPSHUP will be very different, even possibly including real-time voice and video capabilities. It’s all for the better.

Re: Free Wifi

WiMAX is the future. Intel and ATnT are trying to push for this new technology however, they are facing a lot of pressure from big companies such as verizon which are going to lose considerable business if a full fledged 802.16 (Wimax) system is implemented. Since 802.16 will be implemented for city wide wireless internet access. It has better security feactures than 802.11 (wi-fi) which currently offers WEP and WPA (which are easily to break). Any expert can break into a Wi-fi network within a few minutes and compromise the information.

Lets see what happenes in the future. WiMAX will give more mobility, higher data rates and advanced security options (3DES encryption, advanced encryption) to the users.

Re: Free Wifi
