It looks extreme to me arresting a person for covering her face in public. Obviously she should have followed the law but it's very militant like behaviour arresting people for not following a certain code of attire.
I don't wear niqab but I wouldn't want to live in such a country...it's not much different to Afghanistan, is it?

I was just wondering the other day, will the burqa ban not harm French tourist industry? France has to be one of the most visited country on the planet and there are lot of conservatives Arabs (Muslims in general) who go there, which moves me to my next question, is that ban only for the citizens or the tourists are also included?

Would you say that police enforcing the segregation laws of the american south was also doing the right thing? After all they were also implementing the law.
On the topic: I hope 200 of these women get together and do it. Let's see them arrest 200 people for wearing what they want. I hope there will be an outcry. That Sarkozi is such a brainless ass. I myself am not really a fan of that extreme niqab but i support their right to wear it. After all, women are allowed to wear next to nothing despite most people finding it distasteful.

Mangalore collage has banned Burqa in classroom, not while wandering in collage:), and if I am the teacher I would like to see the face of the student whom I am teaching:)

You cannot blame the police for implementing the law. You can blame the lawmakers but not the police. Theres a difference there.

Is it not surprising that it took so long for the French to implement this law. Seriously if you have a problem with the rule, either dont go there or choose some forums to protest. I do not see such a hue and cry when people are not given the right to wear whatever in Saudi Arabia. Recently a friend of mine was hit in the legs by the moral police cause her ankle was showing. If in a country follow the rules.

According to the Quran, there is no compulsion in religion.
And I don't believe covering face is mandated by Islam.
It may be some people's own understanding or interpretation or cultural custom.

I don't think banning niqab in classrooms or offices is a big deal...even in Egypt many places don't allow niqab. But in France you can't go out in niqab at all and that's very concerning when it comes to human rights and personal freedom.

It is my understanding this rule was put in place for security reasons, especially in public places, esp airports. I have not seen anyone in the US in a public place wearing a Nikab.
Personally, it has never bothered me when women in India wore a Nikab. Never gave it a thought, Live and let live. More serious problems in life.

What French are doing is wrong and there should not be anyban of Hijab:), My answer was in context of India, and I personally don't agree with Burqa in classroom, exam-hall and any place where one's identity is to be confirmed like banks and airport:), at least they should show there faces to confirm their identities:)

I am from Mangalore:D.. Never thought that Mangalore would be in the news for this reason. I thought it would be in the news as my hometown. Thought people would say --- "hey Storm is from Mangalore" not like this..

Kannada Rakshan Vedik is not there in Mangalore. It is more of Tulu Sangha..
Anyways good to know that you too have stayed in Karnataka. Karnataka is a beautiful place

I saw there activists in Belgaum and while I was in mysore, they were beating some biharis who came to write RRB exam:D
Mine major stay was in Belgaum and Bidar, never had chance to travel coastal karnataka like Udupi magalore side, precisely tulu-kodva region:bummer:, Bijapur, Raichur, bangalore and mysore.

coorg(entire kodagu district) is the best place in karnataka i prefer it over mangalore region
