Four threats to Aussies - Hussey

Mike Hussey believes South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and New Zealand will pose the biggest threat to Australia at the forthcoming World Cup.

The 1999 and 2003 winners are looking for an unprecedented treble but Hussey knows it will be tough to achieve.

He said: "South Africa are a very, very well drilled unit and Sri Lanka, I think, are going to be very dangerous.

“Pakistan on their day are dangerous and the Kiwis have been playing some consistent one-day cricket as well.”

Australia will head for the Caribbean after five successive defeats - two by England on home soil in the Commonwealth Bank series final and three in New Zealand.

Hussey, however, expects the team will rise to the challenge.
“There’s pressure in international cricket, it’s the World Cup, there’s going to be pressure on everyone, we’re looking forward to it,” the 31-year-old batsman said.

“I think the Australian team in general thrives on pressure and so I think the best of the Australian team will come out.”

His confidence is shared by Shaun Tait, who has only played four one-day games and has still to prove he is capable of filling the strike bowling role normally filled by Brett Lee, who will miss the World Cup because of an ankle injury.

“I haven’t had a chance to talk to the lads about it but I’m sure that they’re not too worried. We’ve got Ricky [Ponting] and Adam Gilchrist coming back into the side so we’ll be back as strong as ever.”
The Australian squad will arrive in the Caribbean on Thursday to begin preparing for next week’s warm-up matches against Zimbabwe and England in St Vincent.

They will then move on to St Kitts, their base during the first round group phase when they will play Scotland, the Netherlands and South Africa.

Re: Four threats to Aussies - Hussey

nice read. After reading this I am convinced that Aus can challenge many teams for the trophy.

As for Aus, there were other noteable threats to their chances of lifting the trophy, considering their recent form: (continuing from 4)
5. Ponting’s Leadership.
6. Hussey’s Leadership.
7. Many players not-FIT and not-available.
8. Aus bowlers not able to defend big scores.

No. 8 is worth a discussion for Aus fans. Is Aus a team of superb batsmen that can perform under any leadership and circumstances!

As for the teams, all teams playing in WC can win it or at least they are there in a hope to win it. So there are as many threats to Aus (or any other team) as the number of paticipants.

Re: Four threats to Aussies - Hussey

Yes Pakistan (provided we can get our full team on the field) on their day are a threat to anyone. As it's we have lost a key player (Razzaq) already and don't know much about the fate of Asif and Akhtar.

Re: Four threats to Aussies - Hussey

Damn...India does not even figure in the list of possible threats.

Re: Four threats to Aussies - Hussey

yes Pak can be a threat to any team.:jhanda:Leave the cricket experts apart and even Hussey can guess that.

Razzaq is a unique sort of player and its not good to lose him but Mehmood is a good replacement for Razzaq.

Asif is a good bowler and he is raw talent. If he is fit, its good for Pak and if he is not fit then Pak can play without him as well. Gul is a good player who can play instead.

Akhter’s fitness and availability is crucial as without him Pak can find it difficult to compete quality teams.

Re: Four threats to Aussies - Hussey

With Akhtar rested once again on mysterious reasons, Pakistan is not entering this competetion with full strength and their chances of lifting this trophy are reduced , but Hussey is still correct as Pak are still a threat to many competetive teams and this includes Aus.

Re: Four threats to Aussies - Hussey

I think the 'threat' has been very much 'diluted' with untimely 'injuries' to Razzaq, Actor and Asif.

Re: Four threats to Aussies - Hussey

But still we can be good if we play this right. Aussies and SA don't play that well on slow flat tracks.
The whole thing is about strategy. A winning strategy for this cup will be the one best suited to WI pitches.
SL should be a working on that as well as Pakistan. Loolmer and Mr. Inzi better get it right. Opening with the right bowlers. You need Gul lala with a good back up for 5 overs each and then switch the other guy with an all rounder (spin or medium fast) for another 5. Then All rounders both ends, medium fast with spin untill last 10 overs. Then you bring in Rana Nai with part time spin again. Fielding Fielding Fielding. can't be stressed enough.
Lets see.

Re: Four threats to Aussies - Hussey

Also, the main Fast pace attractions like Lee and Actor are out. So we will have medium fast all around except WI who will have 1 real fast bowler.

So nobody is really worried about absence of pace bowlers in other teams. No doubt NZ has bond and SL have Vaas. I think unless a pacer has the edge like Actor in their unplayable yorkers, most pacers can be spanked for a lot of runs on slow/flat wickets. So I still believe its anybody's Cup. Anybody who can come up with the right strategy that is.

Re: Four threats to Aussies - Hussey

Well Hussey was talking about threats to Aus, and with Lee out and Symonds still not-fit, Pakistan (even without Akhtar) are a threat to Aus.

Re: Four threats to Aussies - Hussey

Who?
You mean NZ and Aus(Bond and Tait)
