Men were allowed four marriages in Islam in the context when there were more women and lesser men due to wars etc. But then men were asked to do justice between all the wives. This permission of 4 marriages have been applied generally since then. This permission can solve problem in any era whenever there is shortage of men since men usually have higher death toll in wars and other calamities. Men who can to marry 2nd, 3rd, 4th time without any logical and valid reason just want to fulfil their desire for varierty of women and use Islam’s permission for this purpose.

Men are allowed multiple wives because there won’t be any problem for children to identify their mothers. But if a woman was allowed to marry multiple husbands, the paternal relationship would have been difficult to identify (although its not a problem in modern days thanks to DNA).
