Foundation 101

i am not an expert in makeup, but i love makeup, and i am very very picky about the products i use.
there is some information about foundation that i have acquired in last 5 years, that i want to share with you guys.

**Foundation color match. **
if you have a MAC counter near you, go and get your self color matched to one of their foundation. if you can color match your self it’s good, but if you are getting the SA’s help, ask her to give you a sample of the color she matched you with, a shade lighter than that, and a shade darker than that, because most of the time, the SAs at any makeup counter can’t color match desi skin very well, so if you get a sample of few different shades you can come home, and try them to know which one is best for you.
the reason i suggested getting color matched to a MAC’s foundation is NOT because i think MAC is the best or anything. that is only because MAC is very famous and has tons of different shade. if you know ur skin tone in MAC’s foundation it will become very easy for you to find your skin’s matching foundation in any other brand. for example i am NC 42 in mac. if i want to buy a foundation in revlon i will google which revlon color matches best with mac’s NC 42, and i will most probably get an good answer. (i have tried that).

Good foundation shades for desi skin.
I am going to refer to mac shades only for reference.
Most of very fair desi skin tone girls can use mac’s shade NC 30 or 35. it has the right amount of yellow undertone. i personally know a lot of desi girl, who are quite “gori” in desi standards and NC 30, or 35 looks perfect on them.
girls who are usually more tanned or darker skin tone can use NC 40, and 42. i use NC 42 in studio sculp foundation, and few times i did makeup on my friends who aren’t exact same skin tone as me, but still that shade of foundation matched a lot of my friends even if they are shade lighter, or darker than me.
MAC carries many different formulation of foundation like studio scult, studio fix, mineral etc. Even though the shade numbering (ex. NC30, 35, 40, 42) are same on all of their foundation, but sometimes, NC40 of studio sculpt might not be the same shade in Mineral foundation’s NC 40. so if you are buying a mac foundation just try the testers a little. but if you are checking the foundation color only for reference, studio fix foundation is what you should get ur skin matched to.

Using foundation to look “gori”.
Now no matter what anyone says, a lot of desi girls wants to look lighter. personally just for my own self, i don’t chose that look. but if that is what you want, and makes you happy then go for it.
but there are some rules you have to follow even if you wants to go lighter. don’t just pick any shade. If you have a warm undertone complexion, stay in warm tone foundation even if you are going lighter, don’t jump in to pink shades. (if u don’t know what is ur undertone, ask the SA at any makeup counter, they will help you with that too)
5 years ago, when i didn’t used to use any foundation a woman at work (she was desi) gave me her MAC foundation because it was breaking her out. that shade was NC35, way lighter than my skin tone. i didn’t know anything about foundation back then so i used it. but it looked way too white on me. Then i started to sheer it out by mixing it with moisturizer, and it started to look much more natural on me without giving me that gray cast that a foundation would give you if you have a lighter shade. so if you are dark, and wants to use a lighter foundation i would suggest using NC 35 mixed with moisturizer.
If you do get a gray cast on your face when using a lighter shade of foundation do few things. buy a light shade of bronzer, and lightly tap ur brush or sponge in it, and go over high points of your cheeks, nose, forehead and chin. very lightly. and only on the highpoints, don’t brush ur entire face. that will give a more healthy look to ur face, which is more flattering than just white face. also make sure to use blush for that same reason.

Few extra tips and tricks
Desi skin tones are different. we can’t follow the same foundation rules that white skin tone people follows.
in to my personal experience, going just a tiny bit lighter than ur own skin tone gives you more brighter and healthier look. Now be careful, there is a difference between having gray cast due to light shade of foundation and having that brighter look. but when i went to MAC counter i was torn between two foundation NC 42, and NC 44 i applied both on either sides of my face, and in normal light, i couldn’t even tell a difference until i point it out that i am wearing two different shades of foundation, but NC 42 was definitely looking more brighter and alive.
Going just a tiny bit light is ok to me. But not all the foundation have colors where going a shade lighter is not a big different, some foundation have a huge difference of color from going to one shade to another, so just check and see what you are buying. two foundations that i know have a ton of colors are MAC and revlon color stay. Or like me if you can’t decide between two color, go with the shade that is lighter.
ofcourse those rules will not apply on all brands of foundation, so just check and see what works best for you.
If you can’t find ur exact shade, try mixing two colors. you can also mix color of foundation, and face powder/setting powder to make the end result more desired. If the foundation is too light, buy face powder to apply on top that is darker so it can warm up the foundation, and the other way around.

Nice!! thanks for sharing :)

Re: Foundation 101

Awwww that was so sweet of you yanzala. Thanks for taking the time to write a lengthy thread. Hope this helps a lot of people :)

Re: Foundation 101

Thanks for such a descriptive post..
It really is necessary to take these factors into consideration when buying a foundation..
I was repurchasing a MAC foundation last week and found out that my shade is NC37 instead of NC44 (which i was previously using) and i used to always get annoyed because i felt too orangey but i did nothing about it up until now.

Re: Foundation 101

Thanks! Very informative. I am so clueless when it comes to makeup, but this really helps.

Re: Foundation 101

I have this huge problem im really dark like bipasha or priyanka, My skin color looks like NC44 but its very orangy and dark for my face and Nc 42 is abit lighter, What should i dooo i dnt wana look gray but wana look lighterrr :(

Re: Foundation 101

if you want to look lighter then why don't you go with Nc 42, you said it's a bit lighter than ur skin tone. also, there might be a case when mac's foundation might not have your color. If you don't mind spending, try mixing NC 42, and 44, that might make ur shade. or try using NC 42 as a foundation, and buy a studio fix powder in NC 44, together they might give you, your desire color. Or try a different brand of foundation in that case. for example, i heard bobby brown has very good colors for desi skin tone.

Re: Foundation 101

When i went to the MAC counter first time, SA match me to NC 45. she tried it on my face, and it made me look like i am terribly sick. then i searched and searched online, read different blogs of indian girls who seemed like my skin tone, and decided to go with NC 40 because it was matching sooooo many indian girls. but it was giving me that gray cast, and even thought the color didn't look too bad on me, but it just wasn't something i was happy with. so later i went to mac and decided to go with a color darker than NC 40, and found my match NC 42. i am really happy with it. it doesn't make me look sick like NC 45, and doesn't give me any gray cast either.

Re: Foundation 101

^ Yeah i didn't feel too great about the previous foundation and stopped wearing it for a while even after my mum was telling me it doesn't look right.
NC37 is very slightly light for me but i chose this shade because with my last foundation, i felt as if it got a shade or two darker as the day progressed..so hopefully that won't happen anymore..

@*ganxta_girLie: I'm sure as part of the recent Mickey Contractor collection...there was a new range of shades especially for asian skintones - NC43.5, NC44.5...maybe these will suit you more?

Re: Foundation 101

Aww thank you yanzala and ashii for the advises:hug:

Actually when i went to the Mac i grabbed NC44 for myself, But then i consulted just to make sure if its the correct shade for me and she said its too dark for me and rather matched me to NC42, Then i thought it might be looking nice right now with all the lightings and stuff but what if i endup looking gray-ish afterwards..So i ignoed NC42 and bought NC 44 instead with MSF natural in medium deep which again looks soooo dark on me and its totally useless for me:(
But now i have ordered NC40 few days ago so that i can mix it up with NC 44 to get around NC42. I hope it works for me if not ill go check out bobbi brown im havin my eye on bobbi brown foundations they surely have some great desi shades with yellow undertone which i believe also helps lookin paler.

Btw, I bought Pro longwear foundation in NC42 as its darker then the Studio fix Nc42 so thankfully i didnt get that in Nc44 or any darker than NC42 as its again dark for me and its soo drying that after some hours i start lookin dark with dried up skin which looks soo weird :frowning:

@Ashii, Mickey contractor i just saw the collection online, seems very nice!! I feel like getting NC43.5 noww to just give it a try atleast lol Have you tried some of the collection?

Ahhh i so need to finish all these bottles of foundation by mixin lighter shade so that i finish them all and try others:teary1:

Re: Foundation 101

MAC has a great return policy. just keep the box and return it if you don’t their stuff. so try to do that. i have saved a ton of money returning anything i don’t like.
have you tried studio sculpt foundation? i use NC 42 which might be lighter than studio fix’s NC 42, so try few shades in studio sculp. it seriously gives such a nice look to my face without drying. i have horribly dry skin.
Also if the prolong wear foundation is drying you out, and turning dark later it means it is oxidizing on you, so you should definitly return it.

Re: Foundation 101

It has been almost 4-5months since i bought it but used only twice..It would be great if i can still
I so wanted to check out sculpt foundation but one thing im afraid of is, does it make you look shiny/oily? i hate looking like that as it makes me look darker..
I have the horrible dry skin too:( yanzala, How do you find studiofix on your skin? i feel its definately better than the pro longwear one as it doesnt dry my skin that much.

Re: Foundation 101

studio sculpt never give me oily/shiny look. i do notice a satin finish sort of a look, but it actually looks nice, and i purposely go toward that look since my skin is so dry.
actually the texture of studio sculpt is more gel like, or mouse like so even thought it seem thick, and heavy, but personally i feel like it's lightest of MAC's foundation, and the plux is, it never broke me out, like rest of their liquid foundation.
I have never actually used studio fix, i use the MSF in medium dark to set the foundation. before that i was actually using a very cheap face powder from pakistan from the brand karyolon, it worked fine.
what i do is to use a huge kabooki brush. mine is from eco tool, their bronzer brush is just amazing. it doesn't give powder that powdery finish.
i know many people who use studio fix powder, and really really like it. so try it, and keep the box so u can return it if you don't like it.

Re: Foundation 101

I have used kryolan sticks from pakistan too i just bought it in 300rupees and now it makes me upset of why i used them for a year without being concern about the quality...as it really made me breakout! but it looked nice on my face so i kept on using...

ill def check out studio sculpt, What shade are youu?
and do you knw any foundation brush which is best in your opinion as i feel your skin texture and mine is smilar and i have used some of the brushes and they were jus not right on my dry skin.

Re: Foundation 101

^ Do any of you guys know which shade of Kryolan paintstick would look right on an NC37/NC40 person?

Re: Foundation 101

where did u guys buy kryolan...i cant findit!

Re: Foundation 101

ohh thanks for this! really helps
I’m actually going to go 2 the mall, but im stuck between MAC, bare escentuals and Makeup forever. i don’t know if i should get the MAC liquid foundation (studio sculpt) or go for the bare escentuals mineral foundation .. or should i go for makeup forever HD ? they’re all expensive too :teary1:

any tips? (i have dry skin..)

Re: Foundation 101

Great post!!

Btw any of you ladies have any experience with Dior foundation?

Re: Foundation 101

I haven’t used any apart from MAC studio sculpt…and it is great for dry skin and also feels very light on the face!

Re: Foundation 101

Thanks for all helpful info Yanzala.

Lately I have been having that "gray cast" issue with my MAC foundations and I am so fed up after trying many diff shades i have stopped using it. Thinking about MUFE HD, has anyone tried that? I have read mixed reviews about it. I don't want to look lighter, or darker, just my natural skin color and I am finding it really hard to get that look for some reason :(
