Forward facing car seats

When did you parents put your kids in a forward facing car seat?
How old were they and if you remember what was their weight?

The recommendations say to keep them rear facing till maybe 2 years of age if they are comfortable as it has proved to be the safest.
We will upgrade to a convertible car seat only because at the moment our infant seat is proving too small for our 11 month old, about 18-19 pounds.
I would like to keep her rear facing for a while but the problem is that she cries non stop these days in her car seat…!!
She is a happy baby MA otherwise and car rides are the only time she fusses and fusses unless she can see us.

Re: Forward facing car seats

Our convertible carseat arrives in a couple days, and we'll keep our 14mo rear-facing as long as we can. Let's see how it goes. I'll keep you posted.

Btw I sit in the back with her.

Re: Forward facing car seats

I have to sit in the back too if the husband is driving. It keeps her at peace but it is boring for me…:hinna:
It becomes a problem if I am driving..I try to ignore her or talk to her but it doesn’t seem to be helping…and she does have all the toys etc to keep her entertained…

Re: Forward facing car seats

We had to change to foward facing when my baby turned 7 months of age because he's already over 20lbs...it also got uncomfortable for him because his legs were getting stuck in once place.

Re: Forward facing car seats

We changed at 7 months cuz he outgrew the baby seat and also, those 7 months were brutal. Non stop crying....even with me in the back didnt help nor did any toys. He since then has been sitting in a fwd facing car seat and the change is magic......much more happy baby, happy parents!!!

Re: Forward facing car seats

Aaaw.

Waissay out of interest does it depend on wieght then more than age?

I might be getting a car seat soon so this is all very helpfull.

Thanks for the info. :)

Re: Forward facing car seats

^weight (mainly) and height set the limit. Not age.

Re: Forward facing car seats

For us weight has never meant anything and midgets doc has nevercared bout it either. Height has always taken the lead. We learned that immediately with diapers. He has always worn diapers twice the weight recommendation than he should be wearing just cuz of his height. Same thing with thecar seat, if we wereto keep him in the rear facing car seat, his legs would be riding up the back seat.

So for us, weight hasnt been the deciding factor.

Re: Forward facing car seats

^ Same here, but the limitations of the equipment itself is usually more critical with weight (in terms of safety). For example, rear-facing carseats are not too small just cuz the kid's foot touches the seat. But the kid will most likely object :D.

Re: Forward facing car seats

In our case, our son would have his legs up the back seat and then push with all his might until he was able to shove the seat. We found that way dangerous.

Re: Forward facing car seats

My daughter does the same. She pushes against the back seat and tries all she can to get out of the seat, but obvioulsy she can’t because of the belts .And this is where she starts hating it and crying.
well she hates anything with belts…her swing, her high chair and car seat…I wonder if all kids do..:hmmm:

Re: Forward facing car seats

Although age is a factor but most important factors are height and weight of the kid. Here is the source of information

Re: Forward facing car seats

My parents got mine a swing so excitedly. We used to love ours and would play and sleep in it peacefully and let Ammi get things done. But she never settled into hers, which makes me so sad. We might not have gotten her used to it early enough. We’ll put it to greater use with the next one, inshAllah.

Re: Forward facing car seats

In our case I put both boys in forward facing seats when they turned 1. Although their legs were riding up the back seat, here in the UK it is advised to have them rear facing as long as possible. Only finally moved them once their heads started coming above the top of the car seat.

they would never have stayed rear facing after that. However there is a bit of a campaign going on nowadays to have rear facing seats until 4 years. Personally I dont think the boys would have liked looking out the back until such an age. In addition the seats tend to be fairly bulky and not easy to transfer from one car to another. Plus they aren't availible easily here in Britain.

I ended up getting them both forward facing seats in the end - but got them ones with cushions rather then straps instead by a company called Kiddy from Germany (i think) And so far so good.

Re: Forward facing car seats

She complained at times, so we switched to forward-facing. The plus side us she doesn't mind being on her own in the back.

Re: Forward facing car seats

So which car seats have you guys got? i need to get one and there are so many out there Britax, Maxi-cosi, Kiddie, Graco etc etc....i'm really confused and don't know which one to get....please say the model name too and your experience of it...it would really help me.

thanks xx

Re: Forward facing car seats

Britax Boulevard 70 (only $6 more than the Marathon 70 on Amazon!) --> $229

She loves it so far. The only downside with all of these is no canopy. and they can't really be easily switched from one car to another, so be prepared.

Re: Forward facing car seats

Recaro junior sport. The kid can grow with it until he doesnt need any more security than the regular seatbelt. Love it
