Fortune tellers

What do you people think about certain fortune tellers especially in Pakistan who claim to read your destiny?!

beyond fake

Re: Fortune tellers

If the fortune tellers are “truly gifted” in foretelling the future of people…why can’t they predict major catastrophes like war, genocide, natural disasters? Why can’t they predict that the election of a certain leader will prove devastating for a nation, the world in general? The thing is they can’t. They wait until the major events pass…and then they print out articles in magazines saying how they “divined” that a certain person was successful or dangerous because of the shape of their facial features, the total sum of the letters of their first name, the lines on their palm, or the position of the planets and the moon at the time of their birth,

And many of these fortune tellers…are not that successful or renowned…I’m guessing they don’t earn much. Also, I’ve always wondered…Were the fortune tellers able to predict their own future? Did they always “know” before hand that they would grow up to be fortune tellers? :stuck_out_tongue: And would the fortune tellers want their own kids to follow in this profession? Also, do fortune tellers go to other fortune tellers to get their own fortunes read? LOL

I’ve said it before, many of these astrologers/palmists/numerologists/etc make use of the PT Barnum effect…which means that they “word” their predictions in such a general way that it applies to most people. For example, they might say that your adolescence was a very difficult time period…well…adolescence is a rather tumultuous period for most people. It’s a game of words.

Re: Fortune tellers

They wouldn't be setting up their businesses on footpaths to begin with....

Re: Fortune tellers

But how are they able to do that?!

Re: Fortune tellers

FAKES and I hate them. Jeez... especially those malangi types.

Re: Fortune tellers

I've already answered that question in my post, it's a game of words.

If someone tells you that based on your sun/star/zodiac sign........."You are very passionate about your goals. You are very sensitive and have the desire to help, but sometimes you feel that you're not appreciated enough. You are creative and imaginative and have lots of ideas but you become frustrated because when you don't have an outlet to channel that creative energy. You're fiercely protective of those that are close to you, etc"....................I just made this up. Words like these can apply to many people......you play around with the words, etc.

Also, fortune tellers can look at your body language and try to make guesses about you. If someone is dressed in designer clothes....you can assume that they're well-to-do. If someone comes to you in shabby clothes and a sad or worn-out expression on the face.....you might assume that the person maybe belongs to the lower socioeconomic class and is going through some problems...........if it's a wide-eyed teenage girl.............you can assume that she's in high school and probably has a crush on some guy and wants to know if you can predict what her love life will be like because at that age most girls are interested in that, etc.

^And when fortune tellers see SOO many people a week.....I imagine that they can become pretty good at making guesses about people based on their observations about dress, facial expressions, body language, etc. Kind of like a doctor..........when a doctor has seen so many patients that have the same symptoms during the year..........and you enter this office........sometimes the doctor can already look at you or do a very brief check up and tell what you illness you have.

Who knows? Maybe fortune tellers have people who secretly work for them......by reporting details of the laug in the community to the fortune teller. That way the fortune teller already has some background information before hand.

And I've also heard that jinns tell the fortune tellers lies mixed with a little big of truth about a person.

Re: Fortune tellers

I know it's tempting to want to know about your future.......I think we all have moments where we become frustrated and wish that we could get a glimpse of what life would be like in the future or where or whom or what we'd end up with, etc etc.

But...it's a gunnah....it's shirk....and there's a hadith stating that prayers are not accepted for 40 days if you go to a fortune teller.

Re: Fortune tellers

A load of rubbish.

Re: Fortune tellers

More than 10 stories I heard in last 2 months , and mostly victims were ''educated'' :D

Re: Fortune tellers

I wouldn't say its fake or outright dismiss it. I would however question the ethics of the current Palmists/fortune tellers. I think Redvelet is forgetting the very famous story of Prophet Yousuf (May Peace Be upon him) who demonstrated his ability to decipher future events by piecing together information from the dreams. He himself told the king of Egypt (In truth told the future) of a up coming drought. The future events did come true and the kingdom was saved due to his future telling. In Qu'ran it says that he used to tell future events through dreams. So the art of telling future events isn't all together false. There have been very famous Greek oracles and also Roman mystics who told of Ceaser's assassination and fall of Rome. One of the oracles told Alexander the Great that he would conquer the world. I mean you can't tell someone will conquer the world just by looking at their clothes or looks. It is a science just like every other, a bit miss understood but its there nonetheless. If you study it just like how a doctor studies medicine you'll come to learn it and you'll see that it is far more complex than just reading people's face and clothes. A lot of complicated mathematics is involved making making someone's future timeline. It is not haram in a sense that the fortune tell sees what is already in store for the person. He does not make anything up. It is like you channeling in on a game of cricket and looking at the score you can predict that the team will lose. So does the fortune teller but on a complicated scale.

Re: Fortune tellers

^You're giving all the credit to Prophet Yusuf (AS). When according to a hadith dreams are from Allah. It's not that Prophet Yusuf was psychic himself.......rather......it was an ability that was granted to him by Allah. Hazrat Isa (AS) could do something far more miraculous.......he could raise the dead..........but we don't believe that Isa (AS) was "magical" in any way......rather that his ability........which is strictly divine ability and confined only to Allah......was given to him. To attribute such divine characteristics to either of them....is shirk. That's what you're forgetting here. Also, they were prophets. Now....there are Islamic references (hadith) regarding dreams.....but all this other stuff like...astrology and numerology....not so much.

"I mean you can't tell someone will conquer the world just by looking at their clothes or looks"......LOL! Alexander was born into a royal family........His father, Philip II, was king of Macedon. His father used diplomacy and militaristic strategies to bring many parts of the empire together to create a strong kingdom that was eventually taken over by Alexander after his assassination. So, you're right......the oracle....DID MORE.....than just base the prediction of conquering the world by looking at the rich and luxurious garb of Alexander. The oracle also had to take into account the background of the person in order to make the "prediction." And in this case.......Alexander belonged to a royal background......so that must have been taken into account when forming a foretelling. Also........I wonder........how many people of royalty were given such lofty predictions such as "You will be king of the world......you will conquer the world........the world will be at your feet." It's not entirely impossible to conjecture that the fortune-tellers would "fear" giving a royal person a less than savory prediction...for fear of it being "off with their heads." Something to think about. And I've read.....and even watched on the History Channel....that some of the fortune-tellers .......mumbled oracular chants........in a frenzied state. This "frenzied" state could have even been the result of some drug or substance which induced hallucinations. And if you mention people like Nostradamus...........his predictions have either been tampered with....and are too broad or weak....to be considered truly clairvoyant.

Oh and here's another thing to consider. In order for something to be considered truly valid......and more than just a pseudoscience......there needs to be some consistency. Let's take Astrology for example. You have Western astrology....and Indian astrology. Even the dates for the zodiac signs don't match up. What about a situation where two fortune-tellers have ENTIRELY DIFFERENT predictions about the same person? Then what? Lack of consistency would make one question the validity of the practice. And I think it's the lack of consistency that makes most people skeptical in the first place.

Predicting is a common place practice. The word "fortune-telling" sends connotation of magical abilities or supernatural powers/insight that is attributed to the person...............and I feel that it's more common sense and observation than magic. As far as lines on a palm are concerned.........lines are fascinating because they're so different. But nobody's fingerprint is the same either. I think all of this is tempting to read for fun/time-pass.......but it's better to put more faith in the one who created those lines on your palm in the first place.

Re: Fortune tellers

My friend's aunt claimed to be a fortune teller. When she saw me she said a bright light shone on my forehead, that I was special and all kinds of awesome. Now, you all may say maybe she was making a move on me, or that I was wearing too much moisturiser that day. I say, Velvet keep your sanity, logic, and common sense - my ego is siding with the fortune telling lady! Fear my awesomeness!

Re: Fortune tellers

My fortune teller told me to make sure I travel on Oceanic Airline flight # 815 from Sydney to L.A.

Re: Fortune tellers

Did she also give you a set of numbers? And more importantly, are you Sawyer? If so; why hello, how you doin'?

Re: Fortune tellers

She told me who my constant is. :p

Re: Fortune tellers

I can fortune tell, though I need cash in advance

Re: Fortune tellers

“I can fortune tell”…:konfused:

“Too stricter parents” :konfused:

And then there was that “jhaapi” and “paapi” fiasco. :smack:

What’s happening to your English and Urdu, Shaky? So sad…so very sad.

I can’t trust you to tell the time…let alone fortunes. :stuck_out_tongue:
