formula feed and advance prep

I formula feed my little one and have recently been asked how do I advance prepare for feed time. After I replied I didn’t have a routine just yet as Hira is three weeks old the women told me she prepared by boiling the water, cooling it, adding through formula to the bottles and then keeping them in the fridge and warming as needed. She mentioned the fridge maintains the right temp thus no stomach bugs or issues. The bottles are used up within 24 hours. Has anyone else tried this method and does it work?

Re: formula feed and advance prep

This is what I have practiced for my daughter from the very 1st day:

  1. I boil filtered water and keep it in a clean thermos.

  2. I keep some boiled water at room temp in a jug with covered lid.

  3. Bottles are all sterilized.

  4. when she wants milk I just mix both waters and make the formula.

  5. I don’t keep the left over milk for more than 1-1.5 hours in fridge I give it to my cats:D.

  6. to warm the refrigerated milk i keep the bottle in hot water …if you have bottle warmer that’s great :k:

Personally I will not prefer to keep milk in the fridge I’d rather make fresh for her. It may be ok but somehow my mind does not agree to this. Do read the precautions and warnings given on the formula box/container as far as I remember the one I use does not allow to keep it in fridge for long. Believe me it does not take more than 1-2 mins to make the bottle you’ll just need 30 mins every morning to boil water and pour it in thermos and to clean your utensils.

Re: formula feed and advance prep

What you described is pretty standard behavior, although when my daughter was that young I didn’t make them in advance because I just couldn’t anticipate how much she would want (I nursed and supplemented with formula).

Since you can’t leave the milk unrefridgerated for more than 2hours usually, I have also found that if I am going out, it is a real pain to have to keep the bottles cool and then heat them somewhere out. So what I do now is freshly boil water and pack the bottle with the hot water. I then keep the formula powder in those special containers that have compartments for multiple feedings. Usually the water is nice and warm when it’s time for the feed and I just add the powder as needed! (Here’s an example of the container I’m referring to: http://www.amazon.com/Sassy-Powdered-Formula-Dispenser-Multiple/dp/B000067PIZ)

Re: formula feed and advance prep

I didn't get my son used to warm milk so I just fill in his bottles with Nursery Water(purified baby water available at any supermarket) and just mix in formula powder when needed.

Re: formula feed and advance prep

^ My daughter doesn't mind the room temperature water either, but if they are constipated or having tummy issues, it helps for the milk to be warm. But it's not necessary.

Re: formula feed and advance prep

^I agree, that helps! When my son is constipated I just let his milk bottle warm up under hot water for a couple of minutes.

Re: formula feed and advance prep

Yup I also do the above when I am going out with Guria .

My daughter wants lukewarm milk when we started her bottle she wouldn’t take it unless it was lukewarm so I guess every baby is different and has preference from day 1.

Re: formula feed and advance prep

i bb her more than bf.. even if i m at home. but at home its different and easier. i just warm wateri n microwave, add formula, shake and give it to her. but when i m out.. i put boiling hot water in thermos and carry room temp bottle and just mix the two and put formula and feed her. warm milk is ALWAYS better than room temp milk. its not abt baby gettiun used to normal temp milk.. its more to b on the safe side.... if u begin by givin room temp milk.. if the baby has stomach issues then the mom will find it v difficult and irritating to warm milk before givin.. so its better to give warm milk from strt.
