Former Pakistan Test off-spinner and current umpire Akram Raza has been arrested after police conducted a raid to bust a gang of bookmakers taking illegal bets on the ongoing Indian Premier League matches.

“We arrested seven men from a plaza in Liberty area in Gulberg today and one of them has been identified as Akram Raza a former Pakistan player,” a senior police officer at the Gulberg police station said.

He said the police had got a tip off that a gang of known bookmakers was running a book on the IPL in the liberty area and conducted the raid.

“We recovered cash, mobile phones and many telephone numbers in India,” he said.

He said the arrested persons including Raza had been lodged at the Gulberg station but not charged as yet.

Lets hope Akram and others are punished to the extent of law and also I hope they pakistani authorities share the indian numbers with indian media and they publish these numbers and people who they belong to and indian authorities launch an investigation like pakistani authorities have (which resulted in this raid) and start a solid investigation against all kind of betting/fixing in cricket from home ground of global fixing/betting mafia.

Raza arrested under illegal betting charges

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

well said nikemma

good job by the pak authorities.. need to share info with the indian counterparts who should get on it right away... lets catch all these mofos wherever they are..

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

unless he was involved in fixing...who cares?

the illegality of bookmaking/betting in india and pakistan is pretty stupid. leaving the entire bookmaking process unregulated and in the hands of the seediest of characters is a recipe for misbehavior.

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

^ "who cares" ? they broke the law.. deserve punishment..

is the law 100% correct or not.. that's a different issue...

law breakers dont deserve immunity just because you might not agree with the law..

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

the reaction in this thread, including yours, is as if this was a case of fixing.

you want cops to "get on it right away" as if betting on sports is worthy of high priority police attention and man-hours. it's not.

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

Nikhil,
Raza is a domestic umpire and was caught as part of the stings going on after zulqarnain gave his information to ministry of interior, PCB and the ICC anti-corruption unit.
The fact that 1 domestic umpire has been participating in illegal betting is a sign that cricket was being influenced by insiders in Pakistan.

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

Everyone know IPL is not clean cricket.
How many arrests have Indian police made?

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

fully agreed that fixing is the main problem and not just betting..

i guess deep down we know that it's these illegal gamblers that cause match fixing.. they encourage it.. they harvest it.. not all of them but it's just their type who does it.. hence the added hostility..

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

i don't really see a relevant connection between domestic pakistani umpiring and IPL betting. sure the guy should be punished but my point is that sports betting is a pretty minor issue.

yes because we have come to see the words 'betting' and 'fixing' as interchangeable. the vast, vast majority of bookmaking and betting is legitimate and unrelated to fixing.

of course fixing is linked to bookies but that 's all the more reason to legalize and regulate sports gambling. release this beast from the stranglehold and monopoly of organized crime syndicates and seedy bookies. in pakistan there may be religious issues involved but in india there is no reason to keep sports betting illegal.

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

ITs betting not fixing.
He is only one to blame not IPL.

You should rather ask why was he betting on IPL while ignoring pakistan WI matches

BTW Indian police arrests hundreds every years for betting .

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

To me its the tip of the iceberg. Very likely that he or others like him are doing that on some other Pakistan matches.

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

I dont think everyone thinks betting and fixing are interchangeable.. that would make no sense!

Vast majority of betting is legit? By legit if you mean unrelated to fixing yes.. but if by legit if you mean legal.. then no.. it is not legal..

should they make it legal? well thats a slipper slope.. then you should start opening casinos in every big city and legalize prostitution as well... im down for it, but i dont think most indians are..

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

Not sure if nikhil25 was referring to just betting in sub-continent or worldwide, but betting is legal in western countries. Infact book-makers like Ladbrokes legally conduct betting on almost all major sports (including cricket) in the world. I also agree with nikhil25's point about legalizing betting in India since thats the only way to release it from the stranglehold of organized crime syndicates.

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

^ so you're up for legalizing prostitution and opening casinos everywhere too right? just for the record.

I was only talking about cricket betting.. most of it is illegal since most of it is in the subcontinent where its against the law

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

Sorry, I don't see the link between legalizing sports betting and legalizing prostitution. Can you explain the connection ?

Yes, cricket betting is illegal in the sub-continent and thats the reson why crime syndicates are so active in it. My point is that if its legalized, the criminal element can be marginalized.

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

From your last post " legalizing betting in India since thats the only way to release it from the stranglehold of organized crime syndicates." .... prostitution causes a lot of crimes in India too.. if it was legalized and whores were given proper protection from pimps who abuse them... would make it better.. same lines as legalizing bettting to avoid crimes related to betting.. legalizing prostitution will reduce crimes related to the sex trade industry..

Re: Former player Akram Raza nailed in connection with IPL betting in Lahore.

You need to analyze the pros and cons of each activity before you think about legalizing. Prostitution has a social stigma attached to it which gambling does not have. Legalizing prostitution will not eliminate all the problems associated with it - for example trafficking may still be there. Gambling is legalized in some forms - its perfectly legal to go to a club and gamble. Aren't state run lotteries a form of gambling too ?
