Former cricket greats reacted with disappointment on Monday to Pakistan’s tour losses in South Africa, urging the game’s authorities to tackle underlying problems by setting higher standards.

Pakistan lost the five-match, one-day series 3-2 in Benoni on Sunday, following their 3-0 rout in the Tests. They managed to win the Twenty20 series 1-0 only after the first match was washed out.

Pakistan’s perennial batting problems haunted them once again and none of their batsmen managed to post a century in the one-day series. Skipper Misbah-ul Haq was the leading one-day series scorer with a total 227.

“The overall tour was disappointing,” batting legend Zaheer Abbas said. “It’s now up to the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) to set higher standards for the batsmen.”

Pakistan suffered a 211-run defeat in the first Test in Johannesburg before fighting hard to go down by four wickets in the second in Cape Town. They lost the third in Centurion by an innings and 18 runs.

Abbas said the poor Test performance was reflected in the one-day matches.

“Until our batsmen learn to score in Tests, they will not be up to standard in one-days,” he said.

“Batsmen should know that scoring 30 or 40 will not keep them in the team, so they must learn that scoring the first 30 is the most difficult. If you do that then you must go on and play a big innings, which on this tour they failed to do.”

But Abbas defended under-fire coach Dav Whatmore.

“Whatmore guided Pakistan to the Asia Cup win and then the series against India, in India, so we have to keep patient with him,” said Abbas, a member of the committee that picked Whatmore as coach in March last year.

Former captain Rashid Latif called on the team management to analyse the tour impartially to resolve underlying problems.

“Players should know how to play in various formats,” said Latif, adding that Misbah and senior batsman Younis Khan were at key junctures in their careers.

“I think the situation is alarming for both Misbah and Younis,” said Latif. “Misbah has scored runs but time is running out for both and they must analyse their careers before the 2015 World Cup.”

Re: Former Pak greats react after dismal show

Let's see if the selectors are bold enough to drop non-performing seniors from ODIs in particular YK (still a force in test cricket), Afridi and Malik (cannot finish games in which there are 50+/- runs to get)

It's about time we ditched this senior over junior culture

The thing I don't like about Misbah is that he's shown a tendency to stick with the same old tried players at the expense of promising youngsters. Umar Akmal, Ahmed Shehzad, Asad, Hammad and Haris Sohail should be in our ODI team

Re: Former Pak greats react after dismal show

Agreed, it is not like that these seniors are producing any great results, so why not try the new guys and give them good experience in the process. We might lose a few more series but will build a pool of good young players for the future.

Overhaul in Champions Trophy squad unlikely

Despite the team’s unimpressive performance on the tour of South Africa, the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection committee may decide against making wholesale changes in the squad ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy.
With the marathon tour concluding yesterday, the selectors will immediately switch their focus to the last edition of the tournament that will be played in England from June 6.
According to a selector, all the members of the selection committee will assemble at the board’s headquarters in Lahore later this week to finalise the 30-man preliminary squad.
“The selection committee will kick off the series of meetings this week,” a selector told The Express Tribune. “We also have plans to hold meetings with the coach [Dav Whatmore] and captain [Misbahul Haq].”

He added the PCB asked the selection committee has to finalise and submit the names of the probables by April 4.
Selectors oppose overhaul
Meanwhile, in its initial reaction on calls for removal of the senior players, the selector hinted an overhaul in the team may not happen.
“It will not be appropriate to remove the seniors as their experience will be needed in the Champions Trophy.
“The conditions in England will also be challenging and we cannot afford to rely completely on inexperienced players.
“Plus, if we assess our performance in the ODI series against South Africa, it wasn’t a complete disappointment.”
However, the selectors signalled for chances of few notable snubs in the preliminary squad.
“There are some players who will be assessed thoroughly.
“Younus [Khan] will be one of them as he is struggling since a long time. There will be a strong debate on his selection.”

The selectors are as dumb as the captain and coach

Re: Former Pak greats react after dismal show

That is a Priceless quote.

Re: Former Pak greats react after dismal show

Isnt that what I have been saying here on Kk for over two years now?

Re: Former Pak greats react after dismal show

^ in the respect Misbah and Dhonis are twins separated at birth.

In defense of Afridi, most times I think he comes in too late. Misbah Younis stale waste too many overs up front. Afridi gets worked up if he is made to wait too long. Just as a batsman makes room for his shot by extending his arms, Afridi is at his best when he gets to extend his arms figuratively. By coming in with at least 20 overs left. Try him at 4 down.

Re: Former Pak greats react after dismal show

I would take half of mohinder over Misbah any day.

Mohinder was/is an accomplished batsmen/good enough keeper for Indian bowlers and captain who "earns" his spot in the team. Misbah wouldn't even be here if he was not "senior enough" to be handed captaincy after being dropped for mediocrity displays on field for several tours. comparing them is an insult to the services of msd to Indian cricket.

It seems that Zaka is as dumb as the rest of them

PCB chairman ‘satisfied’ with Pak team’s performance in South Africa

**PCB chairman ‘satisfied’ with Pak team’s performance in South Africa
**
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairmanZaka Ashraf has said that the team’s performance was satisfactory inSouth Africa despite being thrashed 3-0 in the Test series and losing a closely fought ODI series 3-2.
This comes after former players have urged the team management to conduct a thorough post-mortem after a disappointing South Africa tour, with a Twenty20 win the only saving grace for Pakistan, the Express Tribune reports.
Although the team missed an ideal chance to register their first bilateral One-Day International (ODI) series win over the Proteas, Ashraf said the their overall performance has been satisfactory, adding that the South African team is the number one in the world.
Expressing his happiness over Pakistan’s T20 win in South Africa, Ashraf said that many top Cricket South Africa officials have congratulated him over Pakistan’s performance, adding that they were impressed with the performance and said that it had improved than before.
However, Ashraf further said that there is always room for improvement for the team, adding that the board is looking into that.
Although the tour was deemed as one of the squad’s toughest assignments right from the beginning, former greats felt the team had opportunities to gain advantage, but failed to avail them due to a poor show from senior players, the report added. (ANI)

Re: Former Pak greats react after dismal show

Pathetic, if you are “satisfied” with such performance then there is no way you can go up.

Re: Former Pak greats react after dismal show

Jis tara kay "leader", aws tara ke awam.

If they are satisfied, truly they have no real desire to the serve the best interest of Pakistan cricket. Just serve their pockets, family members and tribal allegiances.

Re: Former Pak greats react after dismal show

It shows his lack of cricketing acumen, someone who thinks limited overs performances (3-3 if you include T20)** somehow compensate for abysmal test performances.** He's totally disregarding the pathetic batting performance in tests, the main reason why we could not compete with SA in tests. Bowlers, by & large, did ok but I would have played Rehman in all three tests instead of the useless nonperforming third seamer, Wahab or Gul.

Irfan, Junaid, Ajmal and Rehman should have been our test attack with parttimer Hafeez complementing them.

The statement below confirms that Zaka doesn't understand cricket

"Expressing his happiness over Pakistan's T20 win in South Africa, Ashraf said that many top Cricket South Africa officials have congratulated him over Pakistan's performance, adding that they were impressed with the performance and said that it had improved than before."

Re: Former Pak greats react after dismal show

^ Above being said speaking to the media is a different matter. Maybe Zaka had some harsh words internally ... Let's just hope so.

Re: Former Pak greats react after dismal show

Most of these former greats whine only…:disgust:
