Reporting from Kabul, Afghanistan—
Former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani was killed by a suicide bomber on Tuesday in his home in the capital, the latest in a series of high-profile assassinations to rock the country in recent months.
Rabbani was the head of a government panel set up last year to try to begin negotiations with the Taliban, and his death was seen as a serious blow to those still-nascent efforts.
The bomber, who apparently had explosives concealed in his turban, entered Rabbani’s home in an upscale Kabul neighborhood on the pretext of visiting him, said Gen. Mohammed Zaher, the head of criminal investigation for the Kabul police.
The powerful blast injured at least two other people, Zaher said, possibly including at least one other member of the High Peace Council, as the reconciliation body was known.
The Associated Press reported that four of Rabbani’s bodyguards were also killed, but that could not be immediately confirmed.
Rabbani served as Afghan president in the early-to-mid 1990s, and was the head of government at the time of the Taliban takeover.
He was a Tajik, one of Afghanistan’s largest ethnic groups. Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility from the Taliban or other insurgent groups, the killing is likely to heighten ethnic tensions. Most Taliban are Pashtuns, the country’s largest ethnic group.
President Hamid Karzai’s office said the Afghan leader was cutting short a visit to the U.N. General Assembly to return home.
Afghanistan’s political climate, always violent, has become much more so in recent months.
Karzai’s younger half-brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, was assassinated by a close family associate in July. A close Karzai aide, Jan Mohammed Khan, was killed that same month, as was the mayor of the southern city of Kandahar, Ghulam Haidar Hamidi.

I think he was the one who was very much in favor of accepting the Durand Line as the permanent border.
Re: Former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani assassinated
who cud trust Taliban really when they openly lie and deceive...........they walked into his home for these supposedly 'talks' but with the hidden intentions of blowing him up............Islam anyone?
Re: Former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani assassinated
Its an interesting development. With peace talks supported by Germany and Qatar with the Quetta Shura scuttled by the Government. The Haqqani group lending their support to the peace process this week. You have two of the more powerful groups agreeing to the idea of peace talks, there is more to this than meets the eye.
Something is afoot in Kabul. Lets see how this plays out in the next few weeks.
Re: Former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani assassinated
And yet again, the taliban aka murdering dogs show their true colors.

I don't know anything about the victim Mr. Haqqani here but since you mentioned Islam the story of Ibn Ziyad and Muslim bin Aqeel came to my mind. Ibn Ziyad, governer of Kufa, was invited to the house of Shriq b Awar with a trap that he will be killed there (for good reasons). But as he sat in the house of Shariq, Muslim bin Aqeel who had the sword in his hand to kill Ibn Ziyad, never came forward to strike Ibn Ziyad. When Ibn Ziyad left Muslim bin Aqeel was asked why he held back when he the golden opportunity to finish off Ibn Ziyad? He responed by recalling what his Uncle Ali Ibn Abi Talib had told him and which Imam Ali said he had heard from Rasool Allah (saww); "Faith stops where murder begins; a faithful man does not murder others".

On behalf of United States Central Command, the Digital Engagement Team strongly condemns the suicide attack that killed former President of Afghanistan, Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani. This deliberate and brutal criminal attack shows the cowardice and inhumanity of the misguided terrorists who target the honorable Afghans striving to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan.
Professor Rabbani, distinguished Chair of the High Peace Council, dedicated his political career to the healing and unification of Afghanistan, his native country. The loss of this selfless leader and peacemaker will be felt during this all-important time of national reconciliation. Rest assured, dear readers, the Afghan people will not be deterred from pursuing a more peaceful, democratic future for their country and future generations. The United States along with the international community will continue to stand by the Afghan people and support their brave and valiant efforts.
The United States will continue to stand side by side with the people of Afghanistan against terrorism and violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with Professor Rabbani’s family, friends, peace council colleagues and all who were affected by this unjustifiable terrorist attack.

The last time the Afghans tried to deal with their problems on their own, they ended up inviting the USSR to send them troops to help establish a worker's
paradise in their country.

Re: Former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani assassinated
Yeah that is why a US bomb smistakenly hit his house in 2001/2002 when he refused to support the US actions in the country. Well done. ![]()
