Formating my Hard Drive

I installed winxp two weeks ago. Yesterday while I’m downloading my Pack2 from internet - my PC restart itself. I go to Start>Control Panel>add/remove prog>remove Pack2.

After that I try to update my antivirus (Norton) and spyware (Spydoc) but it failed! I go to both website and download the missing file>auto run. After click finish - I had to restart my computer. But still not solving my antivirus/spyware update online. Panic - I do the system restore. After waiting almost one hour, I notice the process hang-up (my pc & keyboard freeze).

I restart my computer again. This time window XP fail to work but I still can go to BIOS. Using my XP CD I try to format my Hard Drive but I got message saying that my hard drive contain firewall and antivirus so installation fail.

Format with floopy A also fail.

A:> format C:
Bad command or file name

What should I do?

Thank you

Re: Formating my Hard Drive

errmmm.. may I ask your age? before I go on replying to your questions. :-/

well, ok.
Most probably the Hard drive in your PC is formatted in NTFS format, which you cannot format from a floppy (DOS prompt) unless of course you have special tools to do the job.

Ok, now there are a few things not entirely clear, are you saying that you want into BIOS to format the harddive? using the XP CD?

If you follow the right procedure then you can format and re-install Windows XP using the CD. I am not sure what you were doing, that you got all those messages.

Here is how you can do it:

[Mind you if you format the PC and you haven't made a back up of your files, then you will lose all the date that is saved on the partition or the whole drive which you format]

1.) Boot the PC using the XP
2.) Just follow the instructions on the screen
3.) After you press enter a few times, setup shows you all partitions and hard drives present in your system
4.) here, you select a partition or a drive where you want to install XP
5.) Highlight that partition using the cursor key, and then press "D" (this will delete the partition
(on the next screen it will ask you if you are sure, ble bla)
6.) Then press "C" to crate a partiton

Then press ENTER to continue with setup and it then asks you if you want to format the partiton you just created.

Re: Formating my Hard Drive

Old enough to cast a vote

No, I didn’t went there to format my hardrive - I’m just telling the readers that nothing wrong with my BIOS (in case some of you may ask me to go there and set first boot device to blah blah blah)

I want all the files to be gone

Done

Window Setup - then I press enter

Press F8

I received this message:-
Window XP Pro Setup

If one of the following Window XP installation is damaged, Setup can try to repair it.

. To repair the selected Window XP installation, press R
. To continue installing a fresh copy of window XP without repairing, press ESC

C:\ WINDOWS ‘‘Microsoft Windows XP Professional’’

F3=Quit R=Repair ESC= Don’t Repair

Re: Formating my Hard Drive

I try both 'R' & 'Esc'

then I received this message

A problem has been detected and window has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time .................... restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

check to make sure any hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware ......... any up date you might need

If prob continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software, Disable BIOS memory options such caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable comp, restart and press F to select Advance startup option

what should I do next?

Thank you

Re: Formating my Hard Drive

Alright.

you should check the red coloured step.
There you leave the old installation and go no to install a fresh copy of XP. If you choose to reapir, then it might work. But if doesnt then its no use to keep trying.

Just re-install. And since you want all data to be gone, then shouldn’t be a problem at all. :k:

Re: Formating my Hard Drive

^-- Forget the above reply.

ahaan ahaaan..

The problem is: **with your hard drive not being detected by XP setup. **(because it is connected to a RAID connector.

What you need is a floppy with the IDE/RAID controller drivers for the mainboard.

Or you should connect the hard drive on the (first) IDE controller..

Anyhow, when XP setup starts, then you see a message saying:" Press F6 if you want to use third party IDE drivers… bla bla [dont recall the exact message now]

Khair, you press F6, then XP setup shows a screen, and you press “S” and then put the floppy in to manully load the drivers for the IDE/RAID controller.

after that, all should go as fine :k:

Re: Formating my Hard Drive

Dear Mod,
Is there any other ways to format my Harddrive?

Thank you

Re: Formating my Hard Drive

Could you try disabling your anti-virus and firewall prior to installing?

Re: Formating my Hard Drive

you cant format it unless you have the floppy, or you connect the drive on a different connector on the mainboard.

The floppy can be made very easily.

If you tell me which mainboard you have? I can send you the link to the drivers, or you can make it using the mainboard CD that came with the PC. Those drivers are always on the CD.

good luck.

Re: Formating my Hard Drive

Did you try pressing L to delete the partition?

Re: Formating my Hard Drive

This is what I did.

Start the computer by using the Windows XP CD-ROM > Press F10 for recovery console >press #1 >admin password > type map> enter> format C:> Y> Exit.

Then restart - install Win XP :)

Today Prob:- I am having prob trying to format my second hard drive (Linux) should I use XP CD to reformat the Hard drive? or can I use floopy/dos to do it?

Thank you for all the answer and I wish all of you happy weekend :)

Re: Formating my Hard Drive
