Formal Greeting

Have you ever noticed how many different ways we gesture our greetings in our culture when we meet someone?

My personal favourite is when women use their hand and bow their head to say, “Adaab”.

I’ve also seen men shake hands and then place the hand, respectfully on their chest. Can someone tell me what is the origin of this gesture and what it means or denotes?

Re: Formal Greeting

Never heard of placing hand on chest, but adaab was an old tradition. I don't know if people still do that.

Re: Formal Greeting

I always do that...i.e. placing hand on my own chest after hand shake:D

Re: Formal Greeting

we must encourage women and men to shun this practice because it is a Hindu tradition...first of all, we must NOT say aadaab or tasleemaat or any other word to replace the word prescribed by Allah which is "assalaamo alaikum". Hindus touch the feet of their deities and elders [giving elders the respect that they give to their deities] and then touch their forehead meaning they consider themselves so low that they will put the dirt of the feet of their deities or elders and place it on their forehead. this IS in essence what we imitate when we bow down a bit and touch our forehead with finger.

we must shun Hindu traditions that we practice because it's NOT about Hindus, Islam ZID hai shirk kii aur Allah shirk ke sivaa sab kuchh mo'aaf kar saktaa hai is liye hameN vo koii Harkat na karnii chaaiye jo shirk se mutaabiqat rakhtii ho yaa jo mushrikaana ho.

you may differ from what i said but i said what i had to say so we must NOT engage in arguments. right?

Re: Formal Greeting

Placing hand on chest is a gesture of respect if I'm not mistaken.

Re: Formal Greeting

Yep a lot of people in Pak do that the hand on chest I mean

Formal Greeting

Guilty of placing hand on chest after shaking hand. It's like now built in the system. I do it all unintentionally.

Re: Formal Greeting

The logic behind this action was to show that i sincere with you from the core of my heart.

Late Zia ul haq used to do this if i remember correctly.

I personally like raise the roof gestures followed by chest bumps and back slapping and maybe a few high 5s and fist bumps..

Wanna know why? Any place this is going on, people are having a good time.

Re: Formal Greeting

And the occasional "get the air squeezed out of your lungs" and then the strongest man challenge begins. Or the hand crush challenges.

Formal Greeting

Placing hand on heart is a nice gesture. All it means is that you're greeting them with all your heart. I.e. accept my sincere heartfelt greetings.

I’ve only seen, or heard of, guys doing the “hand on the heart” thing. I’ve seen desi and Arab guys do it.
I personally LOVE it. It shows respect and genuineness in the greeting.

And… whats the cheek kiss rule when women greet??? :hayaa: Is it 2? 1? 3?! I always feel like I pull away sooner than was expected and there’s always this wierd awkwardness for a few seconds. LOL

Re: Formal Greeting

OP was referring to formal greeting in our culture, not in our religion. Maybe the latter part of the first sentence could be modified thusly?

"encourage *muslim *women and men to shun this practice because it is a Hindu tradition"

Re: Formal Greeting

There should be a smiley for this gesture. Or is there any?
