Nonfunctional like Mosques in Indian Punjab, as the Hindu and Sikh population migrated to India in 1947. I’ve read somewhere that Pindi was the first place where attacks on Hindu and Sikhs lead to massacre in various parts of the subcontinent during partition.

Katas Raj is around 150km from Rawalpindi. Area seems to have importance in Hindu scriptures.

The area is important in Buddhism as well as Taxila is only 50 kms away.

Rawalpindi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rawalpindi has been inhabited for thousands of years, it is believed that a distinct culture flourished on this plateau as far back as c. 1000 BC. The material remains found at the site prove the existence of a Buddhist establishment contemporary to Taxila and of a Vedic civilisation. The nearby town of Taxila has another significance; according to the Guinness Book of World Records it has the world’s oldest university - Takshashila University.[SUP][2]](Rawalpindi - Wikipedia)[/SUP] In Takshashila, 12 miles north-west of Rawalpindi, traces of at least 55 stupas, 28 Buddhist monasteries, 9 temples, a copper plate inscribed with the name Takshashila, a vase with Kharoshthi script among other things have been found.[SUP][3]](Rawalpindi - Wikipedia)[/SUP]

Re: Forgotten Temples and Gurduwaras of Rawalpindi

There are many ancient sites in that area but I dont think its preservation is on the priority list of the ruling elite.

The other day I was reading a news in which NS wants Islamabad to be extended by creating tunnels from Islamabad towards Rawat. I dont think he has given any thought to the historical heritage and the impact on environment (flora and fauna).
