KARACHI: Rameez Raja, a member of the triumphant 1992 World Cup team, on Wednesday took the initiative to finally bury a sad chapter of Pakistan cricket which has haunted his former captain Imran Khan since that famous triumph.
The incident occurred when Imran while receiving the World Cup trophy had in a emotional moment forgotten to mention the contribution of his teammates in the famous victory which led to a lot of backlash and played a role in his finally announcing his retirement from international cricket some months after the victory.
And just how much the incident has troubled the legendary Imran Khan was obvious again on Wednesday when at the launch ceremony of the ‘Pepsi-PCB & Imran Regional Clinics’, he said candidly that he was not happy that the sponsors had included the clipping of that speech in their promo for the occasion.
“I have a complaint with the sponsors that they have included this shot in the promo ad. This has always remained an unhappy moment for me,” he said.
Rameez who took the catch to dismiss England’s last man Illingworth to complete Pakistan’s victory in the World Cup final then came on stage and buried the past.
In a moving moment, Rameez said he finally wanted to convey to his former skipper on behalf of the entire 92’ team that it was a privilege for them to have played under him.
“I can tell you now on behalf of the team that it was a honour for us to play under your inspirational leadership and we learnt a lot from your sincerity and courage. I would say forget the past.”
true.. dhool petnay ka kia fayeda.. jo howa so howa.. they were all good players then and they are all good players now.. InshaAllah we will come back to the same Pakistani style cricket that we saw in 92'.....
A great and timely gesture from Rameez Raja, one which was long overdue. Imran in the heat of the moment forgot to mention his team mates. I am sure it was not intentional.
Tiem to bury the past and give this great man his due.
Why did u title the thread "sad incident"? Nothing sad about it. Imran has apologized numerous times afterwards and said that he didn't prepare a speech beforehand and was taken away by emotions at the time.
Desis need to take a chill pill and don;t take everything so seriously and negatively.

Imran Khan - Greatest Cricket personality in the Sub-continent and perhaps one of the Greatest Captains .I am sure it must have been a privelege for those who playerd with him, against him or under him.
I think Rameez is doing excellent ever since he became PCB chair person. He is nailing down every single thing about PCB, PAK Tema or a Team Player. :k: Specially the way he is taking on ICC.
