For those who worry what people think of them...

Nasruddin Hodja and his son went on a journey once. Hodja preferred that his son ride the donkey and that he himself go on foot. On the way they met some people who said:

  • Look at that healthy young boy! That is today’s youth for you. They have no respect for elders. He rides on the donkey and makes his poor father walk!

When they had passed by these people the boy felt very ashamed and insisted that he walk and his father ride the donkey. So Hodja mounted the donkey and the boy walked at his side. A little later they met some other people who said:

-Well, look at that! That poor little boy has to walk while his father rides the donkey.

After they had passed by these people, Hodja told his son:

-The best thing to do is for both of us to walk. Then no one can complain.

So they continued on their journey, both of them walking. A little ways down the road they met some others who said:

-Just take a look at those fools. Both of them are walking under this hot sun and neither of them are riding the donkey!

Hodja turned to his son and said:
-That just goes to show how hard it is to escape the opinions of men…

Re: For those who worry what people think of them…

Mullah Nasruddin was as real as you or me…

Mullah Nasruddin was a Khalifa (Usmania) appointed judge and jurist in Turkey…

But what differentiated him was that he used his legendary wit and humour to deal with every issue and spread the message of Deen…He became a beloved of the people of his region and his fame grew…

One of his stories is that Hodja was sitting outside his house one time when a Christian came to him and aksed, ‘If I become Muslim, what will I get?’

Mullah Nasruddin replied, that since he himself was a Muslim, he has the power to call a mountain to himself…

So the Christian pointed to one of the mountains and said, call that one…

The Hodja tried three times but the mountain wouldn’t budge…

Suddenly the Hodja stood up and started walking towards the mountain…

The Christian was confused…He’s like, hey…Where are you going…

The Hodja replied, 'Well, I am a Muslim and Muslims are humble people…If the mountain won’t come to me, I’ll go to the mountain…"

The Christian was so amused, he reverted…

And there are hundreds of his stories which his family and friends kept of his adventures and sayings…

I’ll see if I can find a link for you…

thanks

Re: For those who worry what people think of them...

The ironic tidbit is that chances are the father and the son are judging others as well. Humans judge other humans all the time, because we're social animals. But its when that judgement causes harm to someone, that it becomes an issue.

Re: For those who worry what people think of them…

Nice one :k:

I like sabaq-amoz kahaaniyan..

Re: For those who worry what people think of them…

If the father and son had kept going the way they were, without a regard to what people said, then they would be judging others as being insignificant…

But the Hodja and his son were wise…That is why they changed places…Not out of judgment but concern…

The lesson is: Do what is easy, appropriate and proper…

Re: For those who worry what people think of them...

If you don't pay regard to people, its not necessarily because you think they're insignificant. Maybe you're too engrossed and absorbed in other things, like the place you're travelling thru or what your travels are for, or in the company of your companion, that you don't notice it when others are gossipping about you.

And that's really how it should be, IMHO. If you adjust yourself out of concern for what others think, then you'll be adjusting yourself for the rest of your life.

Oh ye of little faith...

Re: For those who worry what people think of them...

O ye of too much faith—in a mortal woman

Re: For those who worry what people think of them...

Lajwanti, the story was never needed in the first place.

Re: For those who worry what people think of them...

Dope: I am an optimist...

PCG:

There are two parts two the story...

Part1) Doing something appropriate, correct, proper, decent, useful e.t.c. which doesn't harm others...

Part2) As long as its all those things, then not worrying about the opinions of others...

Doing something improper, indecent, immoral, wrong, decadent and then not worrying about the opinion of others is just plain ignorance...

Capiche?

Re: For those who worry what people think of them...

So who is doing something improper, indecent, immoral, wrong, decadent, and then not worrying about the opinion of others?

Or is this also a judgement? :D

Re: For those who worry what people think of them...

The moral of the story?
I think the donkey is the smartest one here. he doesn't think useless stuff, keeps his mouth shut and minds his own business.
