Despite all the financial stability and the development work done in last 8 years , Musharraf supporters seem baffled as to why they lost so heavily.
Perhaps they shud remember why many times a girl prefers to marry an average middle class person she likes rather than an old rich buddha.
If development work is the key to popularity, then British would never have left India. They did more development work than any of the post-independance governments did. They built medical schools, universities, brought modern science to this part of world, built roads, railway lines. Yet people wanted them to leave.
why?
Coz they were perceived to be foreign and oppressive.
Its the same thing with military governments. Military men live in barricaded colonies, are exclusiove groups that no one can get into and are arrogant. Despite the fact that politicians belong to elite too, an ordinary man can still sit on gate of a politician for hours and get a “parchi” ro sifarish for the problems he encounters everyday. But he cannot get in a miles distance to military people when they are in power.
Re: For those who are surprised by the Election Result
^ unfortunately you're describing an oligarchy instead of a democratic country. people shouldnt have to approach the gates of anyone.
let elections not herald the status quo of yesteryear, and let us not shift from being thralls of a dictator to grateful mendicants before plutocrats.
in your analogy, its a very flattering characterizing to call nawaz and zardari average middle class loge. lets say average middle class loge who are widely regarded to be serial womanizers and are wanted for crimes in fifteen different places.while musharraf and Q-league are deserving of all thats coming to them lets not imbibe the other set of clowns hero status.

Perhaps you did not read the full post, i did say that politicians also belong to elite class but are more approachable.
I am being realistic. We all know that NS and PPP are not saints either, and Q league too was very corrupt, but the politicians are more approachable and hence are preferred by public over the military regime.

thus I characterized them as plutocrats. we should not be content to have "approachable gates" of our lords and masters.

way I see it, Alhamdulillah military regime is on its last legs. Would that the lawyers and the judiciary had landed the killer blow, after their struggles, and had established themselves as credible forces in the governance game. instead the glory goes to this odious set of people, who are almost assured to abuse it.
Musharraf is one man, who will go soon enough. however, any undeserved laurels attributed to those who take his place may be exactly like the undeserved support Musharraf had from many Pakistanies, when he came to power. I remember being one of those Pakistanies, back in the day bluing my thumb and recording what was atleast one genuine Musharraf vote.
Ali_R I'll politely decline the invitation to play in your little MQM sandbox, thank you
Re: For those who are surprised by the Election Result
yep, forum policy to distinguish between views expressed as a poster and as a mod. sometimes the rocket science of switching windows to use the right nick gets too much for me though, thus my earlier post.
Im happy they got more votes than Q-league. I mark yesterday as one of the happier days I have had, and the imposition of the emergency as my most despondent.
I was just objecting to the comparison of avg middle class man with old rich uncle dude. lets face it, all things going as they should, avg middle class man is the one that will be increasingly relevant now, thus my desire to keep his warts in perspective as we bid old uncle farewell.
